There are so many PP's out there it is making my head spin!! So these noise reducers are add ons to photoshop or are they stand alone programs? I thought you can do noise reduction in Capture NX, lightroom, etc.

great find Dave! thanks!

The results made an interesting read. I have tried some of the plug in versions of the software he tried but not all. His conclusions are about the same as mine except that I rate Neat Image slightly over Noise Ninja. Noise Ninja is easier to use and seems faster but I've been more pleased with the quality of the final output in Neat Image.

I find that the plug in I use in CS4 is Imagenomic and it really makes a difference in noise reduction, even on images shot at 200 ISO.

I like Imagenomic too. Karen told me about it. I use the freeware stand-alone product, and I like the controls. I find that often if I use a lot of chrominance removal with a little luminance removal, I can get alot less of the smudging effect. Then on areas like open sky, I'll apply some Median filter in PSE to smooth that out. A little more work, but it does a good job.
Lots of film gear, D1x & D70, probably more lenses than I really need.

Event photography is about capturing moments. It often requires quick response. Well done automaton can be your friend or your enemy. It all depends on knowing what it can and can't do.
