Good little lenses. They are so compact, you feel like you don't have a lens on the camera. It works pretty well as a reversed lens for macro shooting too. 

The E lenses didn't have any coatings and the colors are always a little flat, when I use one of them I always try to remember to kick the picture control to Vivid to compensate.

I thought the E lenses had some kind of coating that was less sophisticated than the Nikkors.

 I'm sure it has something for protection but if you hold the the E lens to the light they are perfectly clear. I have the Nikkor version of this lens as well which I much prefer to the E series. It's multi-coatings are very obvious when held up to the light. Color and contrast from the Nikkor version is much better than the E series (an issue for the E with film but not so much of an issue with digits). They are both very neat lenses, they are some of the best 50mm lenses around and they have an added fun factor that the plastic F1.4 AF lenses just don't have.
