I had the opportunity to try out the Nikon 200mm f2G VR lens this past weekend and, like all Nikon pro glass, I loved it.

The lens is big, a bit heavy considering it is 200mm, but it was nice to use. Hit all the key points with me, locked on focus quickly, easy to handle, produced sharp images. Judge for yourself.

Indeed a great lens. Saw someone using it whilst I was in Germany recently. Very expensive lens though. I believe it is much used for specialised interior photography i.e. bands. Offers superb bokeh.

I can see how it would very quickly become a specialty lens of some sort. Track side, I found it a bit limiting. Not quite enough focal length. I quickly switched to my 200-400mm later in the morning. More reach and flexibility. However, the image quality and feel of the lens is superb. I was disappointed I never tried a TC on it. See what it would do at 1.4x! That would make it a 280mm f2.8.... still something to see, I would think.

Great shots Art... Yes it is a beast of a lens... quick focusing and works well with the TC1.4 (TC2 mk3 did a great job also)... but rather heavy... and gets heavier as the day goes on :rolleyes: ... that is the main reason that I traded mine ( and I wasn't using it enough)...and it was a straight swap price-wise.. on a shiny new 105 1.4 :wub:

I didn't know you had one of these, Peter. Yes, it does get heavy. Also comes with an impressive, nuclear war protection grade case that can double as a bulletproof vest that also weights a ton. :lol:

I was impressed enough with the lens but didn't use it as much as I had hoped. I am finding that zoom lenses are so much more appropriate for races than a fixed lens. The 200-400mm is really a workhorse lens.

I've seen this lens used for super thin DOF portraiture as well. Not exactly a walk-around, though.

Digital: D610 backed up by a D1x. Quoted from an unknown source by a fellow planeteer, "Never get rid of a working D1x." I've got to agree.

Film: N90s, F3, F100, F4s, C330s. A few lenses.

Why film photography? I like shooting with the equipment. 6x6 Velvia slides from a C330 have an appeal all their own.

Why automated 35mm/Digital cameras? Event photography is about capturing moments. It often requires quick response. Well done automaton can be your friend or your enemy. It all depends on knowing what it can and can't do. "A man's got to know his (camera's) limitations." paraphrasing Dirty Harry...

A walk around? No, that is for sure, it certainly is not. Way too heavy for that. In fact, I am not sure how purposeful this lens actually is. I was thinking about the lens the last few days and I really think the 70-200mm is by far a better choice, more flexibility, lighter and about the same image quality.... not to mention a fraction the price.

This is outrageously priced at $8K CDN! It is a lovely lens, though. No doubt about it.

I used one in a portrait studio days a a second shooter, belonged to the shop. Nice lens and, back then, not hard to carry. Also, zooms were not that good yet. Now, it hard to justify the cost.

I feel the same way. My 200-400 (mind you, this comes with a whopping cost as well), is amazing and so versatile. However, it is big and heavy. I personally am a huge fan of zooms. More so than primes. I find primes very limiting. You are basically stuck in place and limited in scope in terms of composition.

If you want a new perspective, you have to move. I also agree with your comment on the prices. A much better deal on Zooms.
