On the D40(but not the D40x), the hybrid mech/elec shutter will let you use flash at any shutter speed if a flash that the camera doesn'r recognize is mounted. I love this feature and will never sell the D40 because of it. A couple  of months after I sold the D50 I realized it was a foolish thing to sell it because it had the same "hidden" feature. The D70, D70s, and D1 also had this. I want to get a D70s for my next body.

Still shooting DX digital and don't plan on going full frame.
