#258997 Aerial Showdown

Posted by Ron W on 14 January 2019 - 01:06 PM

This is a pretty bad image for all the right reasons, far away, bad light, and so on. As soon as I saw this black vulture land on a tree limb about 100 feet from the eagle's nest. I knew that the eagle would not allow that. And he/she didn't. Since this image was very dark, I decided to try running it through Aurora HDR software. It helped a little bit.

This bird and its mate are still sitting on eggs, which were allegedly laid on Christmas Day. Activity has been slow to non-existent, but will pick up when the eggs hatch.

One of my favorite birds again. For some reason, these little guys always remind me of Winston Churchill. Don't ask why.

#258887 Sandhill Crane Mating Ritual

Here's a shot of one of them mid-jump, hovering over something that the other one tossed into the air. It can be seen under the airborne bird, on the water's edge. I'm not sure what the object was, but it was pretty light weight, I suspect that it was an airplane mixed with moss.Pretty impressive jump huh?

#258881 Sandhill Crane Mating Ritual

Posted by Ron W on 09 January 2019 - 05:04 PM

I went out this morning to photograph the eagles. While there, I watched these sandhill cranes going through their mating ritual of picking up small sticks and tossing them into the air, after which they both vaulted into the air and pounced on the stick. In this image you can see an air plant that they've tossed into the air. I have some shots of them tossing a small stick into the air, I'll post them later on this thread.

Had fun yesterday watching 2 pairs of these Sandhill Cranes trying to out-squawk the other. Lasted for a long time.

Something about the posture of this eagle reminds me of a WWII fighter aircraft.

Frankly, I'm surprised that they have anything left to sell after all that my wife has forced me to buy from them.

#258777 First Time Out For Eagles This Season

Posted by Ron W on 04 January 2019 - 11:51 AM

Went out this morning for the first time this season and naturally I picked a dark, cloudy, and foggy day to do it. I had been told earlier that the eagles had laid their eggs on Christmas Day, but they were both out of the nest for over an  hour, so I doubt that they had any eggs in the nest. If they did in fact lay eggs on Christmas Day, something unfortunate has happened to them, and they'll probably lay another clutch. The sun finally came out a little after 9:00, but we are expecting rain later today and tomorrow. It was good seeing the eagles again, of course when you get to be my age, it's good to see the anything again.

#258764 Another New Year Begins At Harbour Island

Posted by Ron W on 03 January 2019 - 12:15 PM

As has been our tradition for the past several years, we spent New Year's Eve with the same friends that we have celebrated it with for at least 30 years. This is the view from their 18th floor condo. There's lots of construction activity in this area of Tampa. This is a 5 exposure HDR using Aurora HDR.

While I'm bringing you this information a bit late for this Christmas, allow me to tell you about one of the gifts we got this year that might be worthy of consideration for any family gift-giving you might have in the future. It's called Nixplay. It's a tabletop device that allows you to upload thousands of images and it can be configured to play them back in high resolution in an infinite combination of ways. Not only can you upload your own images to the device, but you can select and allow other family members and friends to send your device albums of their photographs. It's a great way to see new images of your friends and relatives,,,and let's not forget...... pampered grandchildren. www.nixplay.com
