Every year, members of my camera club get to randomly select 2 assignments to complete over the summer. At the club’s first meeting in September, we get to present 5 of our best images for these themes.
As luck would have it, the first topic that I drew was “Feather”. That’s it. No specifics.
I was a very frustrated, unhappy camper, spending most of the summer thinking of ways to avoid it. Meanwhile, Angela collected every feather that she found, when she took our dog out; or when she was out walking with me. I still have a formidable feather collection.
Finally, on a very warm Saturday afternoon, I broke out the gear and started working on this.
Once I started, it was amazing what you can do with a feather and some black background paper. Add a Rogue grid and some orange gel and, okay, this is a good start.
Not too bad. Now let's try Steel Grey.
The next day, I decided to experiment with a macro lens. This time I got real close and used some different gel colours. I REALLY liked these results.
I had a lot of fun presenting these at my club’s first meeting.
Looking back, all I can ask is: “Why did I wait so long”. Who knew how much fun you can have with a speed light; some black paper; a feather and a few gels? I will be trying this again.
Thanks for looking everyone.
