So as a bird in flight photographer I typically have very high shutter speeds and rarely use VR. I use the back button focus option with the AF-ON button and was perusing my 200-400VR manual today when I discovered that VR does not function when this focusing mode is selected. I was going to give it a try with slower shutter speeds and panning but apparently I need to switch back to conventional focusing as well which I really do not like having the release and focus on the same button. Why?

The D800/D800e and D4 both activate VR with AF-ON. Previous to that VR was only activated with a half push of the shutter release button. I suspect that cameras introduced after the D800 and D4 may also activate CR with AF-ON.
