I just use the macbook pro and a camranger. Captured images can be sent to a folder watched by LR. Camranger adds some expense but it is a powerful little wireless toy. Does shots for photo stacking, 2 stop HDR brackets, intervalometer and what ever else you might need. Wireless range is also well over 100ft.

What are you using on the camera side? Not too sure what camranger is.

I have used it with both my D800E and wife's D7100 (takes different USB cables )-:}). The camranger is just a wireless camera controller that does a ton of fun things. Just google or look at some of the youtubes.

We have just released  Lightroom 6.4/2015.4 which fixes the issue of Nikon tether with Lightroom running on El captain.
