Hi all,

been using my D3200 for about a year now, and slowly getting to grips with it.

Have played around with the settings having searched around on the web, and 'think' I've got it about right.

 

However, post a recent holiday I was looking to refresh some of the pics in the house and have one photo I was looking to have blown up poster size to 60x40.

The image itself was shot in a RAW format, as been told that the best one (?), but after I sent it to a commercial reproducers, they said it wouldn't work.

File is some 13.2mb in size.

 

Have i done something wrong with my settings, and I suppose the other question is will I ever be able to take photos that i 'might' want to get blown up with this camera.

 

Any suggestions or tips greatly appreciated, thanks\

Hi there,

The professional guys can handle any file but the usual outlets mostly deal with jpeg

The file size shouldn't matter

Have you had any printed before?

Might pay to print a test 10X8 before you pony-up for the big one, a lot is going to depend on how calibrated your screen is and the colour profile

Would be a good Idea to ask what they prefer and what colour profile they want

Raw is the best to do most of your post processing but most labs require a JPEG or TIFF file. Once you are done working on your raw file you can export a full res JPEG. For a 60x40 I would contact the lab and ask them what their minimum file size they need, ie xxxx pixels by xxxx pixels for their posters. I know for a 24x36 inch poster my lab likes at least 3600x5400 but each lab may have different requirements.

They should be able to give you exactly what they need and what cropping you may need to do for it to fit the poster.

Labs in Toronto will not accept file sizes large than 8mb, jpeg format.

 

That may be the issue with you as well.  Custom labs will work with any file size.

Pilchy, I was going to ask just what size you had in mind, when you mention "blown up".  However, Art, Gary and Jim have given you some great answers to start with.  

 

Please share how it works out for you.  I'm going to follow this thread with interest, because future plans include more printing.

Yeah, the D3200 has a 24meg raw file. Not an issue with getting a 60x40. However, asking the lab what they need for the size is the best course. You might have given them a small file, or a low resolution. Meaning, something that is not 250 to 300 ppi. It's hard to tell without knowing what you offered them.

Thanks guys, and some useful info there.

I gave the file to a friend who is a whiz on Photo shop and she played around with it, and I then sent the re-done file (not increased the size resolution though), and have sent off to 'Photobox" to print a 60x40cm poster.

Costing me £9, which for me will be interesting to see the finished product, and if its no good then its not too much money to lose, and if its fine - happy days !!

 

It seems like I've got my setting about right which was more what I was concerned about.

Yes, you did the right thing getting a Photoshop user involved. Also, what Dennis said, call the printer for guidelines.
