#254294 Photo outing with co worker.

Posted by LightMeter on 21 June 2018 - 02:30 AM

Last month I brought my car to his house so he could help me put front brake pads on  it. Found out he's also got a D5300 he bought used with the 35 1.8G and 50 1.8D lenses. He was asking about a good wide angle zoom that doesn't cost much, and I  recommended the 18-70 as I used to have that lens. He picked up one from KEH. He wanted me to show him some tips and tricks with the D5300 and he wanted to learn night photography. So I met him in Old Town Spring. Nothing was going on there, but we got a few good ones. Here are some I got.

#254269 Everyone loves Nissan Skylines

Posted by LightMeter on 18 June 2018 - 05:37 AM

Seems that every time a Skyline pulls up at a gas station, it draws a crowd :) The green one is a '69 and the blue one is a '73. I customized the blue one by painting the interior white and changing the wheels. The last shot shows an original and the customized one. I have another blue one that's going to get light blue interior and 5 spoke wheels.

#254253 June is signs, street signs, billboards etc

Posted by LightMeter on 17 June 2018 - 02:30 AM

Sice the sign was reflective, the D5300's pop up flash lit it from about 100 feet away. I actually had to dial in some flash exp comp to the - side so it wouldn't be too bright.

#253812 My favorite Hot Wheels car

Posted by LightMeter on 29 May 2018 - 02:04 AM

Nice series, Bill.

Blur motion on the tires shows great attention to detail.  :)

In PS Elements, I put radial blur in the wheels and motion blur in the foreground and background.

The Euro Speed series showed up at my local Target. These have rubber tires and more detail than the mainline series.  I got all 5, but the Alfa Romeo is my favorite.

Nice series, Bill, especially the interior shots.

One thought:  would using a cooler WB setting improve the shots?  :)

I used a warm WB to simulate the morning sun and incandescent light in the shop.

#253266 Nissan Skyline GT-R

Posted by LightMeter on 30 April 2018 - 11:26 PM

Last week we got our tax refund and have a little mad money. So I ordered a few Hot Wheels cars and a couple of 1/43 scale die cast models. The Hot Wheels '73 Skyline GT-R arrived today. There were only 197 "real' ones made and were sold in Japan only. They had a tiny 2 liter inline 6 cylinder. There are 4 cylinders larger than that. D5300, Tamron 16-300, and off camera flash.

The Cardinal Tetras I got in late January has a parasite and all died when I was medicating the tank a few days after I got them. So I got some Glowlight Tetras.

#250741 New aquarium flash photography technique

Very nice , Bill.  Are you taking the latter series in macro mode?

No I used the Tamron 16-300 and cropped.

Thanks. I got a few more tonight. I'm getting good at this :) I turned the saturation down on the D5300 so the blue in the Cardinal Tetras didn't color clip and oversaturate.

#250692 New aquarium flash photography technique

Posted by LightMeter on 30 January 2018 - 12:48 AM

In the past when I would use off camera flash for aquarium photography I had the problem of reflection on the glass. Today I tried a folded box on top of the tank to block light from the flash from lighting up what's in front of the tank. It worked well! The 2nd flash does nothing other than to serve as a counterweight so the tripod does not tip over. D5300, Tamron 16-300, Cowboy Studio wireless radio trigger, SB-80DX in manual mode. The MeFoto backpacker tripod was small enough to sit behind the tank.

#250484 Small catfish

Posted by LightMeter on 24 January 2018 - 01:57 AM

Today I added 2 Corydoras Catfish to the 10 gallon tank. Set the D5300 on a tripod and managed to get a good shot of them still. They get to about 2 inches(50mm) I want to photograph my White Cloud Mountain Minnows, but off camera flash is the only option with them. They NEVER stay still. Not even for 1/250 of a second :)
