#258263 What about a D7000 for a 2nd body?

Posted by LightMeter on 10 December 2018 - 06:26 AM

I'm not sure I would get the D7000 as a backup.  I bought two D7000 cameras and did not like the AF performance as well as the D7100.  I got rid of the first D7000 within a year, and never considered the other one an adequate backup.  I ended up finding a great deal on a refurbished D7200 which I found to be much better.  This was 2-3 years ago, but I think I sold the second D7000 for $300 and got the refurb D7200 for $695 (July 2016 - which was a great deal at the time).

If you are interested in used gear or refurbs, wait until 30-60 days or so after Christmas.  Prices get a lot better.

lt's too late to decide against the 7000. One is already on the way. lf AF performance is not that great that's ok. l plan on using the 7100 for wildlife and motorsports. The 7000 will be used for landscapes, portraits, and general event photography. And l can't afford a used or refurb 7200 right now.

#258221 Almost went a whole year without....

Posted by LightMeter on 08 December 2018 - 05:55 AM

....spending a dime on photo gear. The goal for 2018 was to do alot of shooting and send little or nothing on gear. Didn't do much shooting but was doing good about not buying stuff. Yesterday l won a D7000 auction on Ebay so it ended. But l'm selling the D5300 and D70s to pay for the 7000 so does that count? :) l almost made it-only about 3 more weeks until the year's end.

#258220 What about a D7000 for a 2nd body?

Posted by LightMeter on 08 December 2018 - 05:47 AM

l got a 7000 on the way. On Ebay, auctions usually end when l'm at work or sleeping because l work nights and weekends. l can't bid in the last 5 seconds. So l decided to play around and throw out a low bid on one with a day left-220usd. But l didn't notice the shutter count in the description until after l bid, 79,000 yikes. That's probably like buying a car with 100,000 miles. Thought for sure someone would outbid me and it would be OK. But no one did and l won it. lf it turns out to be a good body, then that's a pretty good price. lt comes with the manual, charger, and 2 batteries. Should be able to actually get a little more than that for the D5300 and D70s after Ebay and Paypal fees. Maybe in about 2 years l can pick up a used D7500 for under $600.

#258119 Polarizer just killed it.

l didn't think a polarizer would kill this much of the sun's glare on the bench. Was really impressed. The sun and the camera must have been at the perfect angle.

#258117 December is Christmas/Santa/what ever the Season is to You!

Posted by LightMeter on 05 December 2018 - 02:06 AM

This tree is in the lobby of the apartment complex. Shot it with my off brand 8mm fisheye and D40. When they get presents under it and finish, l'll get it with the Sigma 12-24. The fisheye has some flaws. Such as terrible lQ wide open and so so at f/11. But it was only 90 bucks. Makes the tree look 20 feet tall :-)

#258075 Rail tower and caboose decorated

Posted by LightMeter on 03 December 2018 - 01:14 AM

And the special effects photos. l used slow shutter with flash to give the train going by the "ghost locomotive" look. And the caboose shot was an accident. Forgot to set the shutter speed and got overexposure. But l like the glowing look.

We went to the rail park in Flatonia Texas to see it decorated for the holidays. Every year l've been there the caboose and tower had colored lights. So this was different.

#256017 Venus is about to go in crescent phase.

Posted by LightMeter on 25 August 2018 - 03:42 AM

In late Sept and early Oct Venus will be in crescent phase and still be high enough above the horizon after sunset. I'll probably shoot it with the Tamron 150-600. Here's a link to info.

At Walmart I saw the Hot Wheels "Shop Trucks" series, so I got the '60s Ford Econoline and '83 Silverado.

#255738 Live railcams on Youtube

Posted by LightMeter on 05 August 2018 - 01:03 AM

A few days ago l discovered these cams trackside. You can go up to 4 hours back from live. Which means you can scroll though thumbnails rapidly and find them, and see all the trains in the last 4 hours in a few minutes. And there's live chat. The Virtual Railfan channel has about 10 cameras up. Seems like the Norwalk, CT location is the busiest because it has commuter trains as well as freight.
