Doesn't matter what focal length or camera but it has to be a prime lens shot in February. So break out those foot zooms and lets work in the world of primes lens only.

Jim

Sorry I am not as creative as Dennis or Art but I hope you all have fun this year as I post the monthly challenges . :D

This will be a good one. Last July I bought the 50 1.8G and have only used it a couple of times. Today I went on a photowalk with the Houston Photowalks group and regretted not bringing the 50 for some shallow DOF shots.

Got it.  I was wracking my brain, trying to figure out what I could shoot with my 50/f1.8 - then I remembered that the Sigma 105 is a prime.  B)   Still may try something with the 50 if the weather cooperates.  :)

Look like I go first. I went to my aunt's place and the cemetery nearby. Wanted some shallow DOF shots so I took the D7100 and 50 1.8G. I also used a Tiffen 2 stop ND so I could open up the aperture in the sunlight. These were shot between f/2.2 and 3.2. For the dog on bench shots I had to shoot from a high position. If I got down on my knees the dogs would get off the bench and walk toward me :(

Leviathan -- you can get a decent prime for ~$50 used. The old 50/1.8 AF is a great lens. You'd need to focus manually, but it'd work okay.

I think you can even use manual focus. Put the D3300 in manual mode, focus manually, guess the exposure and shoot. Then use the display and histogram to get the exposure you want. But check me on this.

Check KEH.

Why film photography? I like shooting with the equipment. 6x6 Velvia slides from a C330 have an appeal all their own.

Why automated 35mm/Digital cameras? Event photography is about capturing moments. It often requires quick response. Well done automaton can be your friend or your enemy. With the 50 1.8 AF, it WILL meter on a D3300. You can use any exposure mode-P, S, A, M, or scene modes. It's just manual focus-that's the only feature you lose with this combo.

Oops - clarification - I think you can use a manual focus LENS (AI, AIS, not sure about Pre-AI), the caveat being that the D3300 will not meter with it -- you have to meter it some other way.

Yesterday before work I went on an overpass about a mile south of the one I was on last week. This one has chain link fence, so I needed a fairly long focal length lens with a wide aperture so I could blur the chain link so bad that it disappeared. D7100, 85 1.8D These were shot at f/2.5. The ugly gray locomotive looks like an old General Electric U23B or U25B, informally known as a U Boat. I didn't think there would be any U Boats still in service on a large class 1 railroad.

Lightmeter, loves me some trains. I will try for some prime shots, IF, I can find my prime lens. The problem with all these great zoomies like my 35-80, it covers a good range, including the prime lens length.

Crystal and I went to Razoo's Cajun restaurant fir Valentine's Day. I took the D7100 and 50 1.8G. 50 is kinda tight on DX-a small affordable 24 or 28 fast DX prime would be nice. I know Nikon is not listening, but what about Sigma, Tamron, or Tokina? All handheld, ISO 3200 inside, ISO 800 for neon signs.

Just playing around this is my EM-5 using the Sigma 30 f2.8 DN(60mm FoV in 35mm) Art at f2.8, ISO 400 and the shutter was around 1/60. I was trying to get the upside down view thru the small glass ball. I will try this with the Macro lens but its a zoom though when in Macro it is locked at 47mm or 94mm in 35mm FoV.
