This morning while heading out on an errand, I noticed a neighborhood goshawk on the power pole arm.  I grabbed my D750, mounted the 200-500 f/5.6 and went out to see what I could get.  He remained on the pole arm so I could grab some shots @ the 500mm end.  He then swooped down to the neighbor's yard, then flew to our boundary fence.  I moved to within 12 feet of him and managed to get a dozen images of him before he left.  This one was shot at the 200mm setting, f/11, 1/160, ISO 400, VR on.  This image was cropped only.

Well done!  Great detail. That 200-500 lens is hard to beat. I wonder what that is tied around its left leg?

Cool shot!

Thanks, Dennis.

Great shot! Are you sure that's a Goshawk? It looks more like a Rough Legged Hawk to me. Jeff

When I first looked at the images, I thought it may have been an ID band, but when I enlarged it, it appears to be the remnants of a tether.  The ends are frayed, and looking at the bird from a different angle, you can definitely see where a pad is under the line.

I had designs on putting on a heavy leather work glove to see if the hawk would sit on my hand, but I was too focused on insuring I didn't spook it.

Best,

Dennis

The first thing I did was call my son, and send him a file.  He's very familiar with all types of raptors, and he agreed that it was a goshawk.  This one is half a pair which has an aerie about 5 block, or so, from our house.  They've done a great job of keeping mice, rats, etc. cleaned out.

Best,

Dennis

As an update, my son, has done more research with his raptor buddies, and they've now consensed that the hawk is a red tail.  I looked at several photos of a rough leg, and it seems it's leg feathers don't extend far enough down.

I'll start a new thread with a different photo.

Best,

Dennis
