I got these two moon photos Saturday night, but the planets not so much.  I have a Tamron 400/4 with the 1.4x and 2x Adaptall converters and a Nikkor 300/2.8 AFS with the Nikon 1.4x TC.  The third photo is a composite of Jupiter and Saturn taken with the 400 with both TCs on it.  It's heavily cropped, not terribly sharp, and has a ton of coma around Jupiter.  I compare this with teh shot of Jupiter that Jim got with the P900 and I wonder what I'm doing wrong.  I also tried shooting Mars Saturday night with multiple different lens / TC combinations, but all I got was either a bleached white ball with an orange fringe or an orange ball with a darker orange fringe.  Am I expecting too much out of my equipment?  The last photo (the little one) is a deep crop from a shot of one of the stars in Orion's belt and there seems to be some detail in it unless that's some kind of artifact.

 

Any thoughts??

As my people say, go raibh maith agat gents. I'm actually thinking of selling the Tamron and trying to land a 400/3.5 Nikkor but there's also the 600/4 AI Nikkor that can be had for a reasonable price and a TC300. Will let you all know if I go this route.
