Out with a friend today, light was a little harsh.

Took this with the Nikon1 J4 .... having some fun with the FT-1 and 200-400mm lens!

At least 1 egg currently in the nest.

Sun was almost directly above and behind the bird as you can see from the reflection on the top of the Grebe's head and the way the shadow falls towards me, on the top of the Gebe's body!

Thanks, Dennis and Peter.

Day by day?  I don't get down there that often to do that.  In a week or so, the eggs will be all laid, I am sure, then the crowds there start, waiting for them to hatch.

I don't know about this nest, it is a poorly designed platform put up the the "local enthusiasts".  It is completely flat with nothing for the nest to bite into to hold the platform.  I suspect, first good windy storm, or when mom or dad slides off the nest, it will take eggs and nest with them into the water.

Jason,

I saw your pick on FB. Excellent. However....that "nest" leaves something to be desired! Those eggs are not going to stay there in choppy water!

I agree, Art.

Also, if the grebes don't add more material soon, there won't be any room for the next three eggs (if they have five again this year). .

Yes, agree.  I think part of the problem is what they add washes away.

Very nice IQ for such a Frankenstein combo.

Where do you start seeing noise with this camera??
Don
==========================================================
Digital: D610 backed up by a D1x.  Quoted from an unknown source by a fellow planeteer, "Never get rid of a working D1x." I've got to agree.

Film: N90s, F3, F100, F4s, C330s. A few lenses.

Why film photography? I like shooting with the equipment. 6x6 Velvia slides from a C330 have an appeal all their own.

Why automated 35mm/Digital cameras? Event photography is about capturing moments. It often requires quick response. Well done automaton can be your friend or your enemy. It all depends on knowing what it can and can't do. "A man's got to know his (camera's) limitations." paraphrasing Dirty Harry...

Noise?

I would say ISO 1600+, when you sharpen, you can start to see the noise.

But, these images are not cropped so when you dummy down to 850 pix, it all goes away!

You do not have anywhere near the flexibility of a FF for sharpening and cropping.

Visitors to Humber Bay Park today have posted that the nest and eggs are gone. Probably due to the heavy rainfall all day and the extremely choppy waters surrounding the nest. :(
