A number of years ago, when I first ventured into auto-focus technology, I bought a Pentax SF-1, along with a couple of Sigma zooms.  I spotted a huge plume of smoke about a mile from me.  I got to the scene and followed some Detroit firefighters as they waded into a tire and pallet fire that had consumed a scrap yard.  The footing was nasty, since the burnt tires had left the steel wire belts that were akin to tangle foot barbed wire.  The place was a mess, with old acetylene and oxygen tanks that were spewing their last amount of gases.

The original negative was printed to 8x10, and some of the detail got lost in the printing.  I scanned the negative last month, and boosted the smoke in Photoshop.  I also cropped a bit.

Digital: D610 backed up by a D1x.  Quoted from an unknown source by a fellow planeteer, "Never get rid of a working D1x." I've got to agree.

Film: N90s, F3, F100, F4s, C330s. A few lenses.

Why film photography? I like shooting with the equipment. 6x6 Velvia slides from a C330 have an appeal all their own.

Why automated 35mm/Digital cameras? Event photography is about capturing moments. It often requires quick response. Well done automaton can be your friend or your enemy. It all depends on knowing what it can and can't do. "A man's got to know his (camera's) limitations." paraphrasing Dirty Harry...

Got another for ya.  Dana Point Festival of Tall Ships in Dana Point Harbor.  This is a simulated pirate ship battle and you could almost believe it if Schmedley wasn't out there in the middle of the action with in his 2005 model sailboat.

Not as impressive as Dennis' shot but I got this in Dana Point, CA. It's a header from a wildfire burning in the north end of Camp Pendleton.

View as seen from my appartment...

US Embassy compound fire, The Hague. Image was taken in October, 2016.

A new US Embassy is being built and during the process a fire broke out. No damage was caused to the building itself. Plenty of smoke though!

Great shot Art. You beat me to the punch - that is exactly the theme I was thinking when I initially saw this thread but I have yet to have an opportunity to partake this spring. Everything has to be perfect - it's complicated, and some might say, obsessive compulsive, but I digress.

Great shot Art. You beat me to the punch - that is exactly the theme I was thinking when I initially saw this thread but I have yet to have an opportunity to partake this spring. Everything has to be perfect - it's complicated, and some might say, obsessive compulsive, but I digress.

Thanks, Pete! I too was waiting for the right moment!

Today was the day!

My sister brought me back the smoke and the rum from her holiday south!

Perfect day to have it!
🎥 Just another Photography buff! 🎥
