With the D300 I hardly used AF once the camera was about 2 years old and af was no longer accurate. But I'm so impressed with the D7100's AF, I thought I'd get some nice AF glass. A couple of weeks ago I picked up a used 16-85 and today got the 55-300. I was going to get the 70-300VR, but it's bigger, heavier, and costs much more. Looking forward to getting it next week. Anyone have that lens?.

Paid a few bucks extra for 3 day UPS shipping, but it won't be here till Tuesday. So no 55-300 this weekend. Oh well if I go to Brazos Bend State Park to shoot some alligators, the 70-210 Series E will get a good workout.

The lens arrived today. So far so good. Looks like it's been used very little. VR works, AF seems to be accurate(I'll do further testing on the AF tomorrow). I compared it at 300 with my old screwdrive Nikkor 300 f/4 AF. For the tests I used MF with live view. With both wide open, the old lens has a very slight advantage on sharpness. With both at f/8, the old lens clearly wins. But it's still better at 300 than I was expecting being this is more of an entry level lens. When it comes to purple fringing, the 55-300 wins hands down. Purple fringing is a problem with many older lenses.

I can say I'm satisfied with build quality. It has a metal mount. When zoomed to 300, there's very little slack in the barrel sections-can't say that at all for the 18-135. Zoom is not too loose and not stiff either, no zoom creep. The only thing is the hood. From what I've read, it will bust up as soon as it hits something. That's a shame because it's the best design I've seen in a hood. It snaps on and off so easy. I wouldn't have a problem having to pop it off and back on each time I had to rotate a polarizer. Oh, well, I've got a 58mm screw on hood for backup when it breaks :(

About getting out and taking pics with it-Saturday is going to be a busy day for me, work, change oil in the car, errands... And Sunday I don't know what Crystal and I are doing, And not to mention the cold and rain we've been having. If the weather's going to be this bad, I wish it would just go ahead and snow so everything will be pretty. It hasn't snowed since 2009. Let me out with my new 55-300

Thats how it always is when you get a new camera or lens. Both when I got my D600 and then my Coolpix P330 came  the weather was really bad!

But I know you will enjoy it when you get a chance.

I found a photowalk in downtown Houston Sat night. But I want to travel super light-like 1 lens light. So I'll bring the D7100 and 18-135 or 16-85 with my smaller tripod. Maybe Sunday I'll get to try out the 55-300 if it doesn't rain. Having a rain free weekend day has been tough lately.
