I had been looking for a 24mm lens to fill in the gap of 20 and 28 for my film bodies. The 24-50 was much less expensive than a 24 2.8. I considered the 24-120D but it costs almost as much as a 24 2.8. Also the 24-120 is huge. I guess the 24-50 lost popularity because the first DSLRs were DX and 24 is not that wide on DX. And probably never regained popularity during the FX era because of small focal length range and mediocre image quality. That's one lens you never hear about today. I really wanted the D version because they're not as old(don't care about the extra technology that the D version offers). But I found a nice non D from Robert's Camera on Ebay at a good price. Come to think of it, about 12 years ago I was planning on buying that lens and actually found the dedicated hood for it but never got the lens. Still have the hood somewhere, so I'll have an extra hood as this one I bought has one too.

According to tracking, it's supposed to be here Friday. This weekend I'll have the F2AS loaded with film and looking to find a good place for some ultra wide angle photography. I wanted to go to Mercer Botanical Gardens but last month's flood wrecked the place and it's still not open yet.

Yes the 24-85VR G is nice but expensive and can't be used on the old film bodies. I never thought I'd want the 24-50 again. Thought about getting it in the mid 2000s. The little 35-70 3.3-4.5AF was my go to lens for film. When I got my first DSLR(D50)I wanted a wider lens for it. Ended up getting the 18-70DX and forgot about the 24-50. I guess it's a ghost from the past calling again.
