Another bonus DXO might incorporate U Point technology in their program. This could propel DXO software to new levels.

Glad to see that the fruit will not be withering on the vine.  Still can't figure why Google, gobbled it up in the first place.

Yup they could have reworked NX2 without having any royalty issues and brought back one of the best raw editing programs ever.  I can't believe DXO paid a whole lot since Google was dumping the software anyway.

To me this is still good news it could make DXO a true one shop editor.

In the end Nik has been given new life but Im sure we will have to pay for a new version but thats ok and we will have more choices and that too is good Adobe needs some stiff competition it will keep them honest. Plus I love upoint its a fantastic tool.

Looks like it is in DXO Photo Labs already. So the acquisition probably was made when Google announce Nik was unsupported. I paid $500+ for Nik before the google acquisition and I won't pay again. However, since I am looking for an alternative to lightroom the Photo Lab may be the best of both worlds.

I really hope they fix and rejuvenate NX-2.  This was, in my opinion, the best of all photo editing software on the market.

It has gone stale since they lost/stopped support, but there is huge potential here to bring it up to spec again.

I truly, truly hope, Nikon wakes up and brings it back.

Still shaking my head in disbelief.  <_<

DXO PhotoLab?

Looks like it is already available!

It has incorporated U-Point into the software.

https://shop.dxo.com...re/dxo-photolab

$149 US.

After my ProFusion 2017 photoshow (hope to buy my D850 there), if I have any BLOOD left, will see if I can drain a little more for this.  Not in a hurry, though... would like to download and try it first and compare to NIK.

Regardless, good news, all looks very promising!!

DXO has the new D850 module installed now. I downloaded it yesterday. Seems to work fine. Good news about NIK.

I just downloaded DXO - NIK ..... first impressions....

I am not impressed.

1) It has a very cumbersome interface and it has NOT followed the Apple iOS tool box by any stretch of the imagination.

- NO SAVE

- NO SAVE AS

It has a very cumbersome EXPORT command I am absolutely NOT impressed with.

2) U-Point

- No where near as intuitive as it is in Capture NX-2

- a series of bars open up that you have to get used to

- for some reason, they are not as sensitive or easy to use as the ones in NX-2

- perhaps, similar to the ones used in NIK Creative Suite, not totally sure yet as I never used U-Point in NIK.  Always did this work in Capture NX-2

3) Does not have a MAC feel

- feels like a clunky PC program converted for Mac, and poorly at that.

- lots of PRESETS, really don't like this as I prefer to do my own thing.

- I think this is a throwback to the NIK Suite

- as a result, Navigation doesn't work smoothly, again, feels like garbage from a PC to a MAC interface.

I downloaded the 30 day trial.

In 5 minutes, it turned me off completely.  I will play with it for 30 days, see if I can get used to it.  If not.... I will WAIT until they make this more MAC friendly.

Currently.....   NOT IMPRESSED, in fact, DISAPPOINTED

I was hoping this was the answer to Capture NX-2.

I will keep beating that dead horse for now until it dies.  So far, still hanging in there, although I am having more issues with it.

I've got to do some testing of the DXO software.

I like the Lightroom approach of maintaining the original NEF file with changes in a database.  I don't want to have to create additional TIFF, DNG, PST, etc.  files for most images.

I really like the U-Point technology.  It's by far the best local editing tool I've found - especially with the ability to apply edits selectively instead of through Photoshop layers.

It would be hard to give up Lightroom, but additional editing tools could be nice.

Most of the developers of Nik left Google long ago and went to MacPhun.  MacPhun is a viable competitor among editing tools with Luminar being released in a couple of weeks.
