Thanks for the access. I've been learning digital photography and Photoshop since 1999, and I'm still learning.

My initial journey started with a Kodak 1.4MP doozy, which eventually led to a continuing series of better cameras. I took the Canon route, eventually ending up with a pair of 5D3s. I like to take a pair of cameras when I go for a walk with my wife, and try to get birds in flight and other stuff that is way over there. I can't afford those ginormous Canon telephotos, so was stuck at 400mm f5.6.

I started to realize I was spending a ton of time in post trying to get noise out of my images - the sensor works great with enough light, but shadow detail in outdoor shots is just not very good if you take available light, especially if you push shutter speed up to around 2000 to freeze bird wings and such.

I became dissatisfied with the Canons and embarked on the Fuji path, eventually acquiring both the X100S and the X-T1. I totally love these cameras, but after the 5D3, they really suck at auto-focus. Of course they say "the next one will fix that" but I've already heard that a few times and I am tired of waiting.

So this week I set down change for a brand new Nikon D500 and the new 200-500 zoom. I'm still learning the camera interface, but I already see quite a number of very much appreciated features. I especially appreciate the back button focus design on this camera. I have it set up with the AF-ON to fire my single point, and the joystick to fire Group AF. Now that's what I'm talking about - and that AF is fast!

I've only had the lens for a couple of days, so I don't really have any decent images yet, but I can see the potential. Just have to get my muscle memory reprogrammed so that I hit the right stuff when required. :)

Oh yeah, the title for my avatar: "I can't believe you actually said that." :)

Welcome Benttop, from Toronto, Ontario Canada.

Congratulations on your new purchase. I am looking forward to seeing some of your images.  There are a few people on PN with the D500 and the 200-500.  You are in good company.

Thanks for the warm welcome. I did notice one thing about the forum - the stated maximum image size is routinely ignored (yes, I read the rules). Am I going to get beat up if I post an image that is 1280 pixels wide, or shall I spend the time to resize?

Yes, the rules are 850 px on the long side. You will get friendly reminders at first, and then we will send Guido.  B)
