Nikon Z 6 star tracking.

28 January 2020 - 12:00 AM

Over Christmas I received a star tracker. It is small portable, and can't hold a lot of weight. We are have cloudy nights and snow at the moment. On Jan 26 I was able to test out the rig. I am good taking night shots using the 500 rule and capturing a good night sky. But I wanted to do some deep sky shots, so this gift came in handy.

So, I go all setup. Aligning with polaris wasn't all that great, it was partially block by clouds, so I took my best guess. I was able to use focus peaking on the stars, but I'm not sure that the alignment was all that good. Zooming in to 2:1, the stars are not that great.

Z6, 105/2.5 @f2.5, ISO 200, 14 images; 20 seconds each. The full view of the 105 sees in space, and a 1:1 crop on orion's belt.  You can see in the cropped version a little bit of Orion's nebula, south of orion's belt in the constellation of orion. It is the brightest nebulae that you could see with the naked eye. I shot this in my backyard and the light pollution wasn't as bad as I thought. When I figure this out some more, I want to use my 300/f4 with a 1.4tc. And maybe with the Z7 for the larger sensor.
