Who know of a really good touch up paint for Nikon bodies that will look like it belongs on the camera? I'd like the repair to look like a factory finish type.  I have want to touch up a couple of my camera bodies before they get more wear from places not covered.

Wow not sure I always used a industrial sharpie but to be honest it never looked like a factory job.

Well, good luck with that.  I use a sharpie!  Permanent ink.  Works ok, but not like the FINISH.

Best bet.... See if NIKON sells touch up paint.

Probably your only real hope of success.

Pearl you will hate me then. I believe in looking good while working...lol

End result is that I tend to maintain my gears' looks. Always have been that way. Plus if  the photographer looks nice why shouldn't their equipment?....hahahaha!!

Yeah Jim I kind of have been down that road with other things. You are right it does cover but its not perfect. I was thinking and acrylic semi-glossy or glossy black. it would be more durable than perma marker. Will have to check into that for sure. Will have to check into an art store...

Stick with enamel. Stay away from anything that is water soluble - it won't be as durable. Do a test in a small area that is not so visual. Depending on what you are covering I would suggest a matt/flat black Humbrol, available at better hobby shops. Also, if you can, I suggest using the same technique as automotive painters when doing a touch up - sanding to feather the existing paint down to the substrate, then mask and airbrush the paint onto the bare area, allowing the paint to dry between two or three coats. Clearcoating is optional based on overall finish.

Do not expect it to look like it just came out of the box, but like we used to say after painting our RC car bodies... "It's a 10!" meaning from 10 feet away going 10 miles an hour, it looks good.

Covering some wear on a nikon body. I plan to build up the layer but for what I plan on doing I dont know that I would purchase an airbrush. Also understand it would look brand new but just wanting good clean coverage is my plan. I just have to make sure it blends/matches fairly closely.

Thanks for the heads up!

Greg,

I wouldn't mind seeing what you do and how it turns out.  Peter is amazing at camera restoration, I have seen it first hand.  Follow his advice.

Take pics as you go along, if you have the time or inclination.

You have my attention.

While on the subject what is a good cleaner to give it that new camera look.  Like BP said they get used.  Some oils from my hands, a bit of dust and, here and there some donut crumbs. ( heck I was  a Cop!!) -_-

ON I always use a dash board sheen product. Seems to work pretty good to bring the luster back. Of course it wears off after a while so I have to redo from time to time.

If you are brushing* then thin the paint to about 50/50 and apply small amounts. This will reduce the chance of the paint building up too much. You DO want to build up the paint but applying 3 or 4 coats of thinned paint is better than 1 or 2 coats of thick paint. Allow the paint to completely dry between coats. It will take a while, like days, but will look good.

*Invest in a good quality, natural-hair brush - don't choose the 99 cent Testors plastic P.O.S.

For general cleaning... a small amount of lighter fluid applied to an old toothbrush does a good job of getting dirt and grime out of the "corners".

Greg,

I wouldn't mind seeing what you do and how it turns out.  Peter is amazing at camera restoration, I have seen it first hand.  Follow his advice.

Take pics as you go along, if you have the time or inclination.

You have my attention.

I'm going to start looking into it this weekend..
