#263432 SONY A9II VS NIKON D5 AND Z6: HIGH ISO SHOOTOUT!

Posted by Art on 12 December 2019 - 08:49 PM

Thanks for sharing, Herman.

I subscribe to Perry's Youtube channel, but I guess I'm just not into gear reviews, these days.  Too much to do.

It is a boring review, really.  It just compares little grey squares for the 3 cameras side by side as the ISO goes up. The noise levels go up accordingly.

It is interesting just to skim through it quickly just to see how good the D5 is and how really good the Z6 is when you consider the fractional price of a Z6 compared to the D5 and the Sony.

Thanks for posting that, Herman, it confirmed my thinking that the Z6 is great value.

I will repost it on FB.

Interesting video.

I think the Z6 shines when you compare results and value for the money. It is a fraction of the cost of the other two.

#263416 Downie vs Hairy ... know your Pecker [500mm PF]

I usually point my shooting apparatus at mid body.... so I don't notice the beak that much.

As for the lens... looks like it working pretty good for you.

Keep your friends close ....  :P

So far so good with the lens. I think we will become good friends over time.

#263403 A FIRST for me ... Brown Thrasher

I've got a similar outfit (incl. trousers), Art.  Bought it back in 2016 for a Winter expedition to Dovrefjell, Norway but the trip was cancelled at the very last moment by the Organisers.

They are indeed very warm with an abundance of pockets. Mine is a MAX4 camo version (just like my lens / tripod covers).

I do have a special outfit for the snow that I can wear over the camo gear so I guess that would make me practically invisible too.

One thing though... Art, I think the bears at Churchill have moved onto the Hudson Bay ice. Perhaps next year, October?!

:D

Bears in Churchill are out of my snack bracket, Herman.  Getting there is not that bad, air, train, etc not that expensive, even the hotels are reasonable.  But, the $6K fee to ride a bus for two days is a little over the top for me. If I remember correctly, there are two, maybe three tour companies with the permits to go into the Park where the bears collect.  They can charge whatever they want... and clearly do!

I would say, yes, they have moved off now.  Late October-Nov is typically high season.

Regarding the camo, I have something similar for Spring and Fall, they are great jackets.

Thanks, everyone.  A bit of a lucky break, so many birds were out looking for seed.

Also, I am sporting a NEW winter CAMO coat! Makes me .... invisible ....

Ok, I laugh but that is exactly what I felt like, they did everything but land on me.  I had to back up a number of times to take the woodpecker images as I was too close to focus! It really helps!!

The camo is a white background, tree branch pattern.  I will see if I can find a link.  I am very impressed.

Here we go.... found it, my exact coat...paid $100...best money I have spent on a coat. :

It is really warm, really comfortable and has a ton of pockets.  Birds act like I am not there.

Herman, I checked out where my AF hit is on the subject and more times than not, it is on the body, not the head or the eye.  I judge my images by have a perfect eye in focus.

Check this image out, this was bang on .... a lot of feather detail.

Wow! Stunning images, Art!

You're tempting me to sell my "heavy" 500 f/4...

Thank you, Herman.

Wait until I give it a good testing over.  The day these were taken was a bit overcast and I was a bit challenged for light and the lens is new in my hands.  Have VR on sometimes, off others.  Look for the right setting and the right circumstances for a really good testing.  When I do that, I will give you my honest opinion.  And, I always shot maximum aperture.  No real test to find the sweet spot.

When I took it to the track, this past summer [Nikon NPS], it performed wonderfully and the images were solid. I would say as good as anything I would have gotten from my 200-400mm under similar circumstances.

I think the 500 prime is a force to be reckoned with and I am not so sure I would give it up, just like that.  I don't think I got my hands on a 500mm prime yet, maybe I will borrow one just to do a side by side comparison.

I think, I can get sharper images than what I just posted with the PF, give me a few weeks to find an opening in the weather.  This is our worst time of year and we are having a weird winter here so far.  First real good sunny day, I will take it out again, then we can talk.

I also think that you get more richness in a prime, but I could be wrong. I don't know, which is one of the reasons why I have been waffling on this so long.  I am still tempted to return this and get that 300mm f2.8.  A heavy pig, but WOW, the optics are incredible.  I am still thinking about it.

#263364 Nikon Z6 Images [WARNING-Image Heavy]

Very nice series, Art.

Am I correct in assuming that the rider carrying the checkered flag was the overall winner?  If not, I'm sure that there is a back story there.  ;)

Thank you, Mark.

Overall? NO

The Double Header Weekend is a two race weekend in different class categories.

For example:

Superbike is the top Pro category with the big, powerful bikes.
LiquiMoly is the next Pro level down.

They also have amateur class.

Light Pro Bike etc.

I believe each class gets two races in and two winners are declared.

Then, points are tabulated for the season as there are 6 races total in the summer!

The TOP POINT racer is declared champion for each category.
So, you can win on points and not necessarily on winning!

The Champion gets to put the #1 on his bike in the next season.

I had a mountain of fun with this lens today.  Just getting acquainted for the first time with the new lens.

All images handheld. It is a breeze and a pleasure to handhold.  It weighs nothing by comparison to the 200-400mm I typically haul around.

I turned VR on, boy that helped sharpen the images.

Some of these were taken with the Nikon 800mm f5.6E lens and others with the 200-400mm F4G.

Images are all from the new Nikon Z6 camera.

These images were all taken that the Suberbike Doubleheard Championship Weekend, this past summer at the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park race track.

#263325 Started decorating the apartment

Posted by Art on 04 December 2019 - 09:36 AM

This is one yearly ritual I have never looked forward to.  My wife always goes overboard at Christmas.

We had 4 trees up in the house at one time.

I dragged in a tree this past weekend and we are letting it relax a few days.  A mountain of needles have been falling already. Next, drag in from the garage, 6 boxes of ornaments .... weeeeeeee!
