#263155 Noise Reduction in PS Elements 2019

Posted by Sailjunkie on 15 November 2019 - 12:16 PM

Bill, am just wondering how your effective processing of noise compares to applying Google NIK's Dfine product.

As I'm currently away from home, I am unfortunately unable to try it out myself. If not in possession of Dfine, perhaps someone else can give it a try.

Could be interesting...

Herman, I'm going to shock you by disagreeing a bit.  While I really like Dfine, there have been images where I was more pleased with the noise reduction results that I got in Lightroom.  Nothing scientific, just my impression.  :)

Nice series, Bill.

I got a kick out of seeing the locomotives for the White Pass & Yukon railroad.  For many years, they operated in Alaska, BC and the Yukon Territory.  My wife briefly worked for their trucking division when we lived in Northern BC.  :)

Does this mean that you are the "Deer Whisperer"?  :P

#263095 shortcut watermarking

Posted by Sailjunkie on 09 November 2019 - 01:44 PM

I just use Photoshop

One layer is the water mark

The other, the image.

I have pre-determined sizes.  ... ex 4x6, 5x7, 8x10 Instangram etc and go with that.

Zero cost, other than I bought Photoshop some 5 years ago.

Photoshop also works for me.  :)

there is really no comparison to Photography for its ability to really clear your head and take you away from your day to day stress.

The nice thing about photography is that you don't have to get soaking wet (unless of course, you photograph landscapes or wildlife - oh dear ), to enjoy it.  When it pours outside I can always run amok in my "studio".  ;)

#262942 Nature Depleted in Toronto! :(

Posted by Sailjunkie on 31 October 2019 - 12:17 PM

Lately, we have had an influx of CA people migrations here. They don't put their pets on a leash, and wonder why wolves and coyotes come after their pets. Recently, a women was walking her dog in the woods near a state park, off leash. A bear crossed their path, the dog ran after it, the bear killed it. The women complained. She got a $500 fine for having the dog unleashed, and they hunted down the bear and euthanize it. She got the fine because it is against the law to have unleashed pets in state parks, and she was within the easement. she is fighting the ticket as she feels that the state park didn't do enough to keep the bears in the park.

I agree with Art.

The better half is a funny creature! So, I have rules to survive as long as I have .... some 38 + years  ....

NEVER, answer a question like, "How do I look?", or "Do you like this?" or especially, "Does this make me look phat?" !!
• guaranteed to put a foul mood on any occasion!

I try to avoid comments on old pictures ... like, "Wow, you look great in this picture!"

It's a compliment, right? I think so.... nope. No Sir!! "OH, REALLY! HOW DO I LOOK NOW?" or something to that effect.

Best answer to any question regarding: Clothes, Looks, Weight, Hair cuts, Hats ANYTHING regarding looks .....

"What's this right answer?"

and then run! ;)

Words of wisdom, for the younger generation!

#262926 Toning down blown highlights in RAW?

Posted by Sailjunkie on 30 October 2019 - 12:22 PM

A year ago l got PS Elements 2019 and went from shooting JPEG to RAW+JPEG. ln RAW l can bring down blown highlights much better than a JPEG, but still not as much as l was hoping for. Could it be the software l use? lf l had something more sophisticated like LR would it help? l've heard of ETTR(expose to the right)overexposing a RAW then bringing it down in post. ln my case l do better to underexpose a bit and bring up the shadows to have better highlights.

Shooting RAW gives you more flexibility, but any image editor has its limits.  My experience has been that once the highlights are blown, the data in the blown out areas is lost forever.  Underexposing a bit won't hurt because RAW gives you the flexibility to adjust when editing.

Elements vs LR?  They're both good editing platforms, designed to meet different user requirements.  I've used LR for many years.  If an image is badly overexposed, LR won't help you recover lost data.

Personally, I would use the camera's Histogram WHILE I was shooting.  Even that isn't perfect, but it can give you a general idea about your exposure, allowing you to adjust for your next shot.

My two bits.   :)

Art, you must have been reading my mind!  I was wondering what either shot would like in B & W.  Now, I'm going to surprise myself by agreeing with Don.  Colour works best.  :)

I love dogs! I really do.  They belong on a lease in public places, period.

I fully agree.  Irresponsible dog owners ruin it for the responsible owners.
