Got an Nikon Em a few month's back. It came with a 50mm1.8 e series. got them real cheap. Finally got around to putting new batteries in it. As soon as I seat the batteries the mirror goes up and the fil advance will not function. Remove the batteries and mirror comes down and the film advance works. Any ideas? No real big deal, I bought for the lens. But it's a neat little camera and i thought I might do some street pics with it.

I would download the EM manual, have a quick read, might find an answer there.  If not, I can direct you to a LCS that sells them for $9.

I picked one up just for the fun of it!  How can you lose for $9.  Fixing it if it is broken... unlikely.  Good luck!

Hmm I have an EM have had it for years that is strange. Let me look thru my stuff I have the manual someplace and see if there is any tid bits that might help. Try putting it in the M90 mode and see if it will advance and fire?

Common on that camera  plus the FG/FG20 and usually its the batteries that haven't enough power to complete the shutter cycle. Using M90 which is purely mechanical will also sort the issue though I find it odd that taking the batteries out works.

You could try another set as they might be duff but it does sound like a electronic problem, still you have a fun lens to use.

Problem solved itself. Maybe batteries not seat properly. But the meter is not working, so good bye Em. Time to locate one that's working. Any ideas. I so wanted to use it as a street camera.

Digital: D610 backed up by a D1x.  Quoted from an unknown source by a fellow planeteer, "Never get rid of a working D1x." I've got to agree.

Film: N90s, F3, F100, F4s, C330s. A few lenses.

Why film photography? I like shooting with the equipment. 6x6 Velvia slides from a C330 have an appeal all their own.

Why automated 35mm/Digital cameras? Event photography is about capturing moments. It often requires quick response. Well done automaton can be your friend or your enemy. mine is intermittent, and the power winder stopped working too.

may get another, just to keep my collection intact.

why not get an FG or N2000 instead. more control and weighs no more and priced about the same.

the N2000 weighs about the same as the EM with winder.

Too bad you didn't get the FG. It's about as small as the EM and much more capable. A long time ago I had both. I sold the EM because it doesn't have manual mode but used the heck out of the FG.

Bill,

How did it work out....

NOTE:  US guys buying things in Canada.... your $$$$ is about 20% stronger than the Canadian dollar right now!!

That means, you can buy a $100 CDN item for $80 US!!  This goes a long way to offset shipping.

One trick to getting a good deal on older film bodies is to look to make sure the body comes with original Nikon triangular rings including the little plastic bits that protect the clips from rubbing the finish off the body. A lot of bodies are missing these rings and I have seen them for sale on ebay for $15 a pair. Also look for a good original strap included. I have obtained a few EM bodies with AN-4B or AN-4Y straps - my favoured straps - that alone cost anywhere up to about $30. I have even bought "as is/for parts" bodies that had the rings and a nice strap for less than the price of buying "new" rings and a strap separately.

Good luck with the EM. That was my first SLR and I still have it.

Peter

Ok so I got the cameras working. I feel so stupid. If I had check the manual on line in the first place.. I would have noticed that I had put the batteries in back wards. Dumb. But in my defense when I got the first camera. The batteries in it were in wrong. In short both Em's are working. As for getting an FG. Bill I did consider that, and I may still get one. I got the EM's so cheap, got both for 30.00 plus 2 lenses. So I could not pass it up. Going to do some street shots with one of them soon. Thanks everyone!
