Last week I was able to photograph the PGA Tour Championship using the D850.  This event is the season championship for pro gold and is held at a beautiful venue - East Lake Golf Club - the home course of Bobby Jones.

This series is from the awards ceremony with the trophy, winner of the Fed Ex Cup for the season Justin Thomas, and the Tournament winner rookie Xander Schauffele.  The challenge for the ceremony is they positioned us shooting almost directly into the late afternoon sun.  I had to blast everything with flash and was pretty pleased with the results.

The funny thing now is I have about 3000 frames with the D850 - and almost everything has been handheld.  Processing is still a work in progress.  I was shooting RAW+JPEG and had to turn in JPEG files straight from the camera twice a day.  The in camera copy command worked nicely when needed.  Writing to two separate cards also worked well.

It was a lot of fun.  Last year was the first time shooting this event.  It was hard - especially the photographer scrum and bad light for the trophy presentation.  This year I was prepared.  The only problem I ran into was cycle time on my flash batteries at higher frame rates.  That was understandable, but in the future I'd slow down a little.  The other tip is to get in position early and be ready.  These presentations involve waiting and then a flurry of activity with minimal time to think, test, or change if something is wrong.

The lighting was really a trial by fire.  Good experience but stressful at the time.

I watched the end of the tourney.  It was a great show of golf.  That rookie really earned his prize.  Beautiful shots, the D850 is living up to the hype.

I had specific assignments so there are not as many photos from tournament play.  I'll try to add a few.

Here's the winning putt on the 18th hole - a 2 1/2 foot putt for a birdie that almost missed.

This is a normal JPEG from the camera with a light edit in LR for the first frame.  The 100% crops are unedited.

The first image is the way it looked with a moderate crop to about 35 megapixels on the D850.  But when you have a 100% view of the short burst, you can see just how close Xander came to missing a putt for the victory and a check for $3 million.  The ball was just 2 1/2 feet away and his putt went in the left side of the hole, spun around to the right side, then dropped.  He was laughing about it afterwards.

I was pretty impressed by the detail even at 100%.  I could see the dimples on the golf ball, the name on the putter, and other detail.

OK, Eric, you can stop posting D850 shots.  I am ready to buy! Just need the budget to catch up.  Wonderful photos.

Charles - Did I tell you I like the D850?

Jim - I did not realize how close he came to missing that short putt until I looked at these at 100%.  I was trying to capture the winning putt - not a miss.  But the detail is amazing.  And those were hand held, so the need for special lenses or technique is busted myth.
