Most of you will be familiar with the area around me and the fact I often wander up onto Cleadon Hills which is accessible from just a street away. Its not a large area and it isn't high but its quite pretty and a nice place to wander.

Well the local authority in their unfathomable wisdom have decided that instead of running a mower over it once a year they will put some Dartmoor Ponies on it. Now this has met with some opposition....actually its met with lots and lots of opposition from locals. It is a very popular dog walking spot which could lead to trouble, we unfortunately have a couple of areas around the hills with less than desirable occupants who could well take it upon themselves to go and cause the ponies harm for nothing more that spite and a lack of morals. The worry is some of the kids might take pot shots at them with air rifles or just go and bother them.

Anyway we now have ponies and to be perfectly honest I forgot they were there. I dashed out tonight as after a vile, grey and thoroughly miserable day we got a splash of colour in the sky just as the sun was about to set. I went up on the hills and while concentrating on lining up a shot I nigh on bumped into these fellas - not the best of conditions and they cantered off after a few moments of me clicking at them but for now I'm quite happy.

The hills are fairly well fenced in but the council have patched the gaps. I hope they do well and don't get bothered as they're a nice addition to the area.

No Jim, they are essentially wild animals that usually live on remote moors and heathland so have evolved to be hardy.

I was thinking since they are fenced in they have less space to hide from the elements if they were truly in the wild they would have woods etc to hide in. My daughter has some wild goats to help with control of her pasture and she has two half shelters they can get under in bad weather since there are no trees on the paddock or pasture.

They do look hardy!

There are a few trees and shrub areas but to be fair (though I do moan) we live in a moderately weathered part of the country so i can't see a big problem.

Knowing out councils/government the H&S meetings to sign this off will have been long, paperwork heavy and expensive so I'd guess they are ok.

Nice shots BP! They are larger than I thought and indeed they seem fairly friendly.

I never did take into account your weather conditions. They do look like their right at home. Is there a stream or small lake for a water source? Or do they have a trough the city will maintain?

...thats a good question.

Not that I'm aware of and I honestly don't recall seeing any artificial water source (there isn't a natural one) so either they don't need it or I've missed something obvious.

I will get back with an answer......

BP, we have several barrier islands here that support wild horses and there the horses drink whatever water they can find, fresh, brackish and even the salt water. The ponies are very photogenic. I'm sure that they'll become a welcome attraction after awhile. Very nice images. Do you know how many ponies they released?
