Nice series, Blanco.

What focal length were you shooting at?  :)

I was shooting with a D500 and Sigma 150/600

I made a trip recently to Los Angeles with the intent to visit some family. As some may know I have a thing for aircraft photography.  For some time I have been following some folks who gather at this small canyon at the edge of Death Valley. On Hwy 190 there is a small town at the base of the canyon named Panimint Springs. I believe the real name is Rainbow Canyon, but it has gained a reputation for the military aircraft that drop in on occasion and blast through. The canyon has un-offically been renamed. It has become quite the tourist destination with visitors from all over the planet.

I actually have a small collection of challenge coins. Yours is one of the most unique I have seen!

On occasion I help out a dog trainer that works his winters in Texas, because New York is just too cold. After a recent day in the field I broke out my D750 with a 70-200 2.8 and played photographer for a few minutes.

#250487 Interesting comparison of the 500 f4 and 200-500 Nikkor

Posted by Blanco on 24 January 2018 - 04:56 AM

I happened across this article ...Looks to be 2 years after the fact.

I actually know Andy personally. He used to live in the DFW Metro and often had Birding tutorial classes.

Quite possibly one of the best photographers I have ever known.

He used to come out and shoot aircraft pictures with me. He owns just about every piece of Nikon equipment made, and knows how to use it.

I still to this day hit him up with questions i cant answer.

Last year he moved to Canada to be close to family.

We still keep in touch and I see him on occasion at an airshow.

#250475 Blanco's version ofthe DIY lens hood

Posted by Blanco on 23 January 2018 - 10:08 PM

Gordon inspired me to make my own hood for my 400 2.8

Following his lead I got an old hand cleaner towel bucket. i happened across a thick piece of cardboard tube that was almost the correct diameter.

I peeled away layers of the cardboard until i had a tight fit over the end of the lens and a tight fit on the bottom lip of the bucket.

I heated a disposable razor knife with a MAPP torch and using the cardboard as a template I melted out the bottom circle.

I glued in the cardboard ring and sprayed inside with flat black paint.

Then just to be different i ordered some vinyl with a carbon fibre pattern.

I cut the piece and used a heat gun to shrink the vinyl around the outside of the bucket.

It is just a slip on fit but is really pretty snug.

In all my total outlay / Black Paint $1.99 / Carbon fibre pattern vinyl $6.00

Recently made a road trip to San Antonio and wagged my J-5 around downtown at night.

I used my FT-1 and the 16-80 2.8 that came with my D-500. It is a bit of an ugly combination, but makes brilliant pictures.

Anyhow, this type of photography is a bit outside my comfort zone

#245032 Mi24

Posted by Blanco on 04 September 2017 - 11:22 AM

Attended a small warbird show this weekend and had my J5 along taking some video. A group there restores Soviet cold war era aircraft. I was told all the Mi24s in the us are at this location (Lancaster TX airport)

I was able to take a number of stills while making the video. This one was my Fave

This was really just for fun. Had not done this type of shot and wanted to try something new. Not easy to get the camera to focus and trigger in darkness.

#244178 Tried some birding

Posted by Blanco on 14 August 2017 - 09:04 PM

There has been a bit of weather lately that has put a damper on much of my photography. Thought I might like a little bit of Birding. I had observed several of these raptors (Mississippi Kites) in my neighborhood working in a team to hunt our over abundant dove population.

Noticed this one enjoying an in-flight snack.

Just for grins and giggles i popped the Super Tak on my V1 just to see what would happen. the surprise was the focus confirmation still worked . I know this is probably nothing special, just me geeking out and having fun.

#242884 M42 /F mount adaptor?

Posted by Blanco on 17 July 2017 - 12:53 PM

I went ahead and made a stab at it. I found a pretty clean Takumar 135 -3.5 for $75 and a chipped adapter $8, which my D750 kinda treats as a AI lens.
This is from some of my first shots so don't be overly critical as Im still feeling it out a bit.
