Big people, little people, people that climb on rocks. Fat people, skinny people, even people with chicken pox!

Share them!

Any lens, any camera.

Thanks, Dennis.

I may have posted this before, but I love this photo. It was at the fair on sheep and goat night. You can feel the bond.

By happy coincidence, this month's challenge is closely related to an assignment that my Project 52 class had, late last month.  The assignment was to make a cover image and interior image, for use by a healthcare business in a brochure on mental health travelling medical stations.  The cover image was to respectfully pose the subject looking pensive or thoughtful.  The interior image was to convey hope or “light at the end of the tunnel”.

To make things interesting, we had to use colour grading, to help create the mood for each image.  We had to select a colour from one pallet, for the cover; and a colour from a separate pallet, for the interior.

The lighting was straight-forward:  ambient light and a 5-in-1 reflector for each image.  The camera settings were identical for both images:

  • D810
  • ISO 200
  • 24-70/f2.8 @ 24mm
  • 1/40 sec
  • f 2.8

The post-processing is where the magic happens.  I used a gradient fill for both images, with opacity at 40%.  On the first image, I used a layer mask for the face and hands, at 40%; then a levels adjustment with a gradient mask.  I finished with a curves adjustment, using the blue channel to introduce a small amount of yellow.  I finished in LR, adjusting the white balance, crop, sharpening, contrast, texture, clarity and vibrance.  A few less steps for the second image.  I masked the face and hands at 21% opacity; then used a curves adjustment, reducing the amount of red.  Finally, I used the same steps in LR.  As a final step, I added a vignette to both images, to make sure that the background wasn't a distraction.

My instructor loved both images.  He especially liked that the window frames formed great leading lines.

I learned a couple of useful lessons from this assignment:  First, it's amazing what you can achieve with only natural light; Second, it's amazing how colour grading can be used to create a specific mood.

Finally, I'd really like to thank Angela, for agreeing to model for me.  Over the course of Project 52, she has cheerfully agreed to serve as model, studio assistant or food stylist when required.  This is one course that has become a bit of a family affair.

I really enjoyed this assignment.  Thanks for looking, everyone.  :)
