I have been experimenting with the Focus Shift Shooting on the D850

This is a 21 image shot.

I have yet to get the hang of this.  Taking the images, setting up the shot etc is not the problem.  My Photoshop just doesn't want to stack these right to me satisfaction.

My latest experiment.

This looks good, I like it better than the BW.

Thanks, Dennis.

Did I post the Stack 21 in B&W?

Can't remember... ... I have two images posted, this one is stacked, the other isn't.  I am leaning toward the B&W myself.  More dramatic.

I do like the warm colors of the strings ... have to play with it some more.

Isn't focus stacking supposed to have everything in focus, from front to back?  Or did you want to keep the background out of focus?  If so, then well done.

Agree with you on preferring B & W.  As noted in your other post, I think that Version 2 of your B & W has more detail because of your changes.  A slight nod to that version.  :)

Focus Stacking.... or lets us Nikon's terms ....Focus Shift Shooting is supposed to grab a pic, in steps, from front to back and when you stitch them together, you get that beautiful focus stacking image that has everything in focus that your MACRO lens simply can't get in one shot.  It expands the depth of field for a range.

I did it for about 1".

FAILED

The settings were correct and 21 images should have covered the PEG.  If you look at the coiled string, not all of it is in focus and it should be.  PHOTOSHOP failed me.  It doesn't this constantly with the version I have.  Useless as a feature, basically.

The program is supposed to grab only the focused stuff and not show the blurred out parts.  It is not don't that here or you would not see any part of that peg out of focus.  I have tried this a number of times and have come up with the same results on different images.

Have to learn why this is happening.

How much is the total distance the 21 shots cover, and how large is the actual distance you want to cove. Be sure to account for the focal plan actual distance to cover the subject. At angles, the distance will be longer that the size of the subject.

Interval was 1"

Focus step is 1

Check this out... I used HELICON SOFTWARE to stack the same images.  Failed in one spot but did a nice job on the subject!

This is way better than PHOTOSHOP

#2 is a definite improvement, Art.

I'm not really into focus stacking (yet), but I've heard good things about Helicon.  :)

Interesting.  I have yet to get into focus stacking but will one day so for now I will watch your progress carefully.

Try the same on a ruler. The strings are soft in both, slightly Ill grant you that. But, its a focus stack. It should be tack sharp.

Thanks, Dennis.

They sell a lifetime license. I will buy that, if I go with this.

No way I am paying a sub!

I have zero time this week. Will jump on this in the following week and do as serious experiment.

Thanks for tip, Dennis.
