Slik U212 legset Question

08 February 2019 - 01:12 AM

This is a bit of an off-the-wall question.  I had a Slik U212 tripod until it was damaged.  Loved it, and I want to get another, but it only has a 5.5LB load rating.  I'm wondering if this is due to the head, which is kinda flimsy, or is it the load limit of the legset.  Anyone got any insight on this??

FWIW, I now have an old Bogen 3021 Pro with the removable center column, and it's awful.  Moving the center column is nearly impossible when there's any appreciable weight on it.

Quick lens review

First, as some of you know, I bought an old 28-200G lens because my 28-300VR is pretty heavy and I need a lighter lens for travel.  So far I'm impressed.  The lens is smooth and focuses quietly and quickly.  The zoom is very smooth and the lens is just a tad bigger than the 50/1.4 and probably a little lighter.  It's really sharp -- witness the photo below.  Not a bad purchase for 3 bills.

Mountains B&W

From Rim of the World drive in the San Bernardino mountains.  Clouds were covering the lower peaks and we got a perfect vantage point.

Back Injury and Having to Adjust

04 November 2018 - 01:11 AM

Hi Everybody,

I did some kind of damage to a disc in July and have been trying to deal with it ever since.  Holding a camera is not so easy now, and as most of you know, my main rig is a D610 and a 28-300/3.5-5.6 Nikkor which is a heavy rig.  I've had to make some adjustments.

I picked up a 28-200/3.5-5.6G which is just a little bigger than a 50/1.4 and very light.  Should make shooting easier until either the cortisone and the decompression therapy do their thing, or I get the surgery.  The jury is still out on the lens as I really need to do some tripod shooting to see how well it performs.  It's not a VR lens, so in low light, I'll need a tripod or monopod.  It reviews pretty well, and it gives me most of the range I get from the 28-300, so I'm hoping it'll serve well until I'm back up to speed.

I also picked up a Benro A48FD monopod (the one with the feet) with their DJ90 tilt head.  That head only tilts up and down, and when the monopod is on the feet, it's a bit like a tripod (though you do NOT want to leave the camera on top of it unattended) and it doesn't rotate side to side all that easily, so for an additional 16 bucks, I added a Slik heavy duty quick release head. which rotates horizontally.  Didn't want a ball head as I found it a bit difficult to control on top of a monopod.  This thing is hefty, but not heavy, and it'll hold a 300/2.8 with no issues.  I'm excited to try it out.
