#258922 The Windmills Of Your Mind...

Posted by Sailjunkie on 12 January 2019 - 12:47 PM

Nice shot, Herman.

When I think of all of the wind turbines out there, these wind mills look like an idea that was only slightly ahead of their time.  :)

#258914 Editorial Portrait

Posted by Sailjunkie on 12 January 2019 - 12:50 AM

The latest assignment was to photograph someone from our town who did something that was so amazing.  The challenge was to use the image to show why what they did was so amazing.  Local charities were closed over the Xmas holidays, but our next door neighbour stepped forward.  Steve retired from the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra at the end of the year, but still plays for his church orchestra.

Because this was the first time that I have ever shot anyone's portrait, I wasn't sure what to expect.  I needn't have worried.  Steve was very easy to work with; and I remembered enough of the videos on portrait photography, to get him in a good pose.  I had been concerned about how Steve would hold his viola and bow, but just told Steve to hold it as he normally would.  He told me that this posture is his "Zen" mode.

I wasn't expecting so much positive feedback during this week's class.  Don told me that I nailed it.  His only suggestion would have been to place the shoot-through umbrella a bit higher.  When I mentioned that we only had a 7 foot ceiling, he said that is when you switch to a soft-box.  The learning continues.

I used a Godox SK-300 strobe with a shoot-through umbrella.

  • ISO 64
  • 24-70/2.8 @ 46mm
  • f11
  • 1/125 sec.

PP was limited to a levels adjustment in PS, plus cosmetic cloning & healing.  I finally used LR for limited final adjustments.

Thanks for looking everyone.  :)

Nice looking camera.

Just before Xmas, one of my fellow camera club members was selling a used Fuji S-9000 for a really good price.  Got it for Angela as a Xmas present.  Had a play yesterday, so I could show her.  I was very impressed.

Looking forward to seeing some pics, sir.  :)

#258871 Real CSI's use Nikon as well

Posted by Sailjunkie on 08 January 2019 - 01:09 PM

It's a Nikon, all right.  Can't see enough of the body, to say which model.

The International Space Station also uses Nikons.  D4 or D5.  :)

#258780 What is it with Pentax and their ISO?

Posted by Sailjunkie on 04 January 2019 - 01:40 PM

It’s unfortunate because I remember them as a serious camera brand for serious amateur photographers. They also had an impressive lens selection in my day. It was a very well respected brand.

Their current line up is convoluted and has an extremely dated and unappealing look. Their website is Ricoh, not Pentax...
and, this is part of the problem. This company, in my books, lost its identity and its loyal followers.

Apart from the fact that you have just seriously dated both of us, you are 100% correct.  :)

#258779 Just For The Heck Of It.....

Jeff, you're a very brave man.  If I put together such a list, I would have to take care, to make sure that Angela never laid eyes on it!  :P  :D   :P

#258720 December is Christmas/Santa/what ever the Season is to You!

Posted by Sailjunkie on 31 December 2018 - 12:36 AM

Project 52 is on Xmas Break, and I decided to contribute to this challenge before it ends.  While it may be a bit late for Merry Xmas, it is not too late to wish everyone a very Happy 2019!

Thanks for looking, everyone.  :)

#258655 Tea

Posted by Sailjunkie on 30 December 2018 - 12:48 AM

This assignment was simple:  create an all-purpose ad for a tea company with 6 shops.  The ad would be used for local and regional magazines, plus the in-flight magazine for a major airline.  There were some restrictions.  The image had to be:

  • vertical
  • colour
  • clean with some space for text
  • lead the viewer's eye to the right

I shot this with 2 Godox Strobes and soft-boxes.  I also used a scrim and a large reflector card on camera left.  Two large yellow cards purchased at our local dollar store formed the background.

This was shot at

ISO 64

24-70/2.8 @ 52mm

1/125 sec

I used PS to clone out the join between the two cards.

Thanks for looking everyone.  :)

I'm looking at Fuji too, when the time comes

Just picked up a used old Fuji CSC for Angela.  Very impressed with the build quality.  :)

Thanks, Jim and Art.

Art, I briefly considered natural light.  However, space in front of that window is limited, and Angela was already being a very good sport.   ;)
