#262047 Portrait of my Mom

Posted by Art on 23 August 2019 - 08:56 AM

My sister remarried this week and of course ...  <_<  ...

Mom asked for a portrait.  I like the way this turned out.  Not a fan of the one flash setup, still produces shadows.  But for a quick and dirty capture, I am happy  with how this turned out. The image is not cropped, just sharpened

Open to any critique or tip.

Art, perhaps it's time to move to Churchill, Manitoba?!  I could then join up with you there for some good 'ol polar bear hunts!

We need to do this trip one day, perhaps in a few years, when I retire and unleash ... my CASH FLOW!  Right now, I can justify the expense.  It is still outrageously expensive.  I do hear they are either repairing or repaired that broken rail line that sunk in the bog a few years ago.  That should ease some of the travel expense.

Its the old ....
• new glass or Churchill

• fix a bathroom or Churchill
• stay married or Churchill

 only one answer is correct!

Dennis, you want to do this as well?

Plenty McCains products here too... Heck, I even have a McCains top exec in the family!

No kidding.  Years ago, we had an HR person who lived a few doors down. She was high up in the company as well and if my memory serves, spent some time in Australia, then came back. Unfortunately, it has been a while and I forget their name, they moved to a bigger place in the area.

Very tasty Art :)

Sweet potato fries ... probably fried in the factory! but baked at home! Gotta love McCains.  Big company here, wonder if they ship overseas?

They look a bit oily, Art!

Well, no oil added so that is an interesting comment.  These are frozen fries, baked in the oven.

#261973 Nikon Z8 or Z9 64 MP rumors!!

Posted by Art on 19 August 2019 - 11:41 AM

The rumor mill is starting to get hotter on these new, bigger, fancier and most likely very expensive new mirrorless cameras!

To be honest, I can hardly wait to see what they announce next.  After trying the Z6, I am very enthusiastic about what Nikon is doing.

#261970 Superbike Championship Race Weekend!! [WARNING: Image heavy]

Posted by Art on 19 August 2019 - 10:01 AM

I had the pleasure of attending the Canadian National Superbike Championship last weekend and took along my D850, 200-400mm and ..... a Nikon Z6 AND ... a NIKKOR 800mm f5.6E!!!!

I had a field day.  I was nervous about taking the Z6 because I am not familiar with it but to be honest, got used to it in under 30 minutes and it performed like  ... well, I can't find adequate words but I was extremely impressed.

Keep in mind, the shutter freezes the image on the vast majority of these images.  Panning is not my forte, and most of the images are of the racers coming at me from oblique angles so a high shutter speed and reasonable depth of field is a must.  The vast majority of these images are taken with the use of a monopod.

ALL of the 800mm are taken with a Monopod as it is simply too heavy to shoot otherwise.  In regards to the 800mm ... my review is one word .... WOW!

There is nothing else to say.  This lens is simply amazing!

Enjoy the images, please feel from to comment, critique, ask questions etc.  I welcome all comments and posts.  Thanks.

Ben Young, #86, is the new National Champion.  Next year, his bike will sport the #1, denoting he is the standing Champion.  The previous champion, Jordan Szoke is a Superbike racing legend, having won the title 13 times!

Jordan Szoke, former National Champion

This is my favorite racing image I have ever taken.  I purposely composed this by finding just the right spot on the track where the retaining wall and crash tires and hay bails are out of site in the background.  I then waited for the opportunity of my favorite racer to come around the corner.  He has a very distinct racing style and is very photogenic on corners!

I took this with the D850 and the 800mm lens.

Taken with the Nikon Z6 and 800mm lens

Not sure what combo I used.  Most likely Z6

Girl Power! Sara Michelle Cotton!

Tomas Casas, a rising star in the Pro Superbike level....

Just a random selection to give you a flavor of the race and the challenges with light, angles and exposure.

It would certainly beat Arts Mustang for ground clearance and traction in the snow :) :P :D

I change to Michelin ICE-X in the winter.  Bring on the competition, Peter!

Art, does this mean you'll be selling the vrrrmmm, vrrrmmm Mustang? LOL

You know, Herman, I considered selling off other things, like collections and things like that I have that have some value.  I just CANNOT justify this type of pricing.

The problem in TORONTO is no one appreciates good PHOTOGRAPHY much less willing to pay for it.  A selfie from an iPhone is now considered a standard, "professional-grade image" by most clowns.  I have barely made back gas money from attending the Race on the weekend.

I will post some images of the race.  You can judge as harshly as you like on the quality of the images, but believe it or not, most will no pay for their memories of participation in the Race!

Mind-blowing.  You have to get on a some lucrative assignment to make these purchases possible.

#261965 Egret Z6 - 800mm

Posted by Art on 19 August 2019 - 09:32 AM

So.... how do you like the Z6?

Check out the FACEBOOK PlanetNikon Photographer.  I have a 12 page review, many of you have most likely already downloaded.  How do I like the Z6? LOVE IT!

It is a great camera.

It is a very well thought out system.

It performed well at the RACES!!!

I am going to post a few motorcycle race pictures just to show you.

The camera is very much like the D5, believe it or not.  Great images, very much comparable.  Shocking, however, is frame rate, focus attainability and how many really good sharp images I got from the camera.

It didn't matter if it was from my 200-400mm or the big bad boy 800mm.... the Z6 rocked it.

#261872 Egret Z6 - 800mm

Posted by Art on 08 August 2019 - 10:07 PM

Came across an Egret today on a short walk with the new gear.  Like the King Fisher, challenging lighting and location.  Best I could muster.

This guy was very skittish and if you even moved a step closer, he flew... and I am quite far away, due to the reach of the lens.

Regardless, managed this one.  I know I could do better, but Monday might be my only chance.  Have to return the gear on Tuesday.
