I like that the girl in the back is like...I want no part of this. It's soft and noisy, but it fun to see the activity.

#258889 Thud, the sound of gear hitting the floor.

Posted by fotofill on 10 January 2019 - 01:11 AM

Here's a little issue I am dealing with. Anyone using a camera strap system, knows to keep checking the tightness of the keeper that resides in the tripod socket. The short of the story, I didn't and a D5 with 24-70 hit the gym floor. Camera is fine with no mount problems. The lens is in two pieces with the from element section separated from the rest of the lens.

I called my friend at Roberts and bought a nice used one. I then took photos of the injured lens and sent them to https://www.peachtreecamerarepair.com/ in Atlanta.I sent info 3 times and heard nothing back. I live in Nashville, 3 hours way.

I finally sent the lens to http://www.nikoncamerarepair.com/ in the Chicago area. I had heard that they used to be a Nikon repair station, but they do more than that now. It's a 24-70 2.8 and I will sell it somewhere upon return.

Those Black Rapid connectors are TIGHT now and forever more.

Thanks you guys. I bought a Brother HL-L8260cdw, based on your my "brother's" recommendations, thanks.

Did you know HP designs their printers and sends specs to Canon to have them built? Toner carts are interchangeable.

#258600 The faces of basketball

Posted by fotofill on 26 December 2018 - 07:41 AM

Recently there have been Christmas parades at night, tours of decorated homes etc. but I feel much more at home covering sports. My age and arthritis challenges me to sit on a hard floor at the end of a college court, so I almost always turn-down that assignment. Basketball has even lighting and it is in climate controlled environments. That makes me happy. Some advice for those shooting basketball would be:

      >Shutter speed at 1/640 or faster, When shooting under the goal, do at least EV +1, maybe more or the faces will be too dark.

      >Choose a different court position every quarter, this has made my photos look different than others shooters who just stay under the baskets. I shoot from behind benches and at midcourt. I like to stand at the corner of the the court that is on the right-handed shooter's open side or "left hand down" side.

       >Shoot to the spot where the action is moving into. Know the game, make an educated guess what action is about to happen.

      >Get safe shots early

Coach speaking to team during a full timeout when players are seated

A player shooting a free throw

          Players dribbling and directing others

     >Watch for floor battles like held balls, or traffic in the lane, that is where the best "faces" in photos occur.

     >Pass up the shooter shooting, focus on the net to get focus, then come down to get ready for the rebound photo.

IMHO, Players attempting a jump shot is not a very interesting photo.

These are some of my learned behaviors. I would be interested in getting feedback from sports shooters  as to what is in your head about technique in the sports that you shoot.

#258285 Violinist

I was going house to house, photoing Christmas decorations. At one of the homes, a greeter said,"Think of what a home in 1900 would look like at Christmas. Well, I feel that old sometimes. The house was DARK and it was full of visitors. I had to find something to shoot. The young lady was playing and I was shooting.

I have been using Sams for a long time. I get 20X30 s printed on boards. But, be sure to do what you did about NOT using their auto exposure tools.

Posted by fotofill on 02 September 2018 - 04:37 PM

It was an interesting night. I still had some natural light early in the game, that always helps. All the light towers  went off TWICE during the game. Kids took out their cellphones and lit-up the night.

This was just an experiment. I got the idea to sit out and try to photo these little creatures. It was late in the day.

D5, 400mm, ISO 10K, shutter 8K, Distance was maybe 10ft.  Depth if field- probably about 6cm tops. It was NOT easy.

It is not...8-). Nashville is in Davidson, but Springfield is in Robertson Co. And, I misspelled the guy's name in the article. I normally do not write, but I did. I am attaching the correction idea I came up with.
