I am sure its a great lens, but can somebody please explain to me what makes this one so expensive. In my simple mind its only glass and electronics. Is it made out of some exotic material?

I am ofcourse being sarcastic, but still. Is really any lens worth that much money. Unless you have a business and can write it off as an expense, who can afford it

I will just stick with my "cheap" 200-500 :)

What makes it so expensive?

STUPIDITY!

Their marketing people got the RAZOR-RAZOR BLADE analogy backwards.

The only good thing good about that price, is folks selling their 400 prims.

I'd like to see comparison images between the 180-400 vs 200-500 and see if it warrants paying at least 10x the price of the latter lens.

The most irritating thing with both Canon and Nikon's pricing policy is that it potentially also increased the prices we pay for third party lenses.

In terms of pricing... not a good trend folks, not good at all!

This is the replacement for the current 200-400 lens. BUt, I agree Herman, not a good trend.

Would hate to think what they might have charged if they had made it an f3.5 or f2.8.

If you look at the 10 best selling DSLR's only the D850 would be something you'd put that lens on.

For 12399 USD I'd rather have a lightly used 2016 Yamaha R6 and new Tamron 100-400 :P Or maybe a Nikon 200-500 instead of the Tamron. Either one would suit me.

Canon has a 200-400 with built in 1.4x TC for 10999USD. Looks like Nikon outdid them . The cold war between Nikon and Canon goes on.....

For that kind of money, I could buy a 27' sail boat in "Bristol" condition.  What's that?  Moorage?  Maintenance?  Insurance?  Okay, the lens doesn't need the first two, but I'm still going to pass.  :D

Herman,

You have to assume people are going to buy this.

WHO is going to buy it?

OOOOH!!  Professional Sports photographers .... all 37 of them ... THEN WHAT?  They going to do a production run of 200?

Really, how stupid are they?  As lovely and functional and beautiful and HEAVY and One-Point-Four-y that it is.... SO WHAT?  at $16K (CDN$) an elite few will buy and it will sit on the warehouse floor collecting dust after that.  I see no market for this lens at that price.

180-560.... big deal, really.

A used 200-400 is a bargain, not to mention 3rd party glass in roughly the same ranges at a fraction the price.

I do agree, the hefty price tag is not good for pricing... but pricing is a funny thing when NO ONE BUYS THE STUFF!!!  As inventory sits.... PRICES PLUMMET! Not really worried about this.

Will keep an eye on Craig's List just to see if people start dumping old ones.  I somehow doubt it.

This lens is another laid egg.

Yes - this makes the 200-400 an even better choice.

The 200-400 sold new for as much as $6900, and is generally available used for $2700.  I'm sure the optics on the new lens are great - and the 200-400 was pretty good.

I'm not terribly surprised at the price - given the 400 f/2.8 and the Canon alternatives.  This is a lens that will be used by pro sports photographers  - especially those that have some other company funding it.  It's not likely to have much demand on the amateur side for a while.  But - I'm sure it's a sweet lens.

No matter how great the lens is....what is the point of selling a limited number?

Economies of scale would dictate greater profitability priced lower and selling skid loads.

I don't understand this strategy.

Art, I think your are wrong. LOL Sports shooters are going to prefer their fixed 2.8 lenses over this one. There are a number of reasons.

The biggest two are, they don't want to be caught in the zoom and they have some room to play with cropping with the good glass in telephotos.

When covering sports, my second shot, often comes from the 70-200. I find myself maxing it out at one end or the other as the action changes. I don't really zoom it during action. I preset the zoom that is around my neck for distance, so it is ready for action shooting as it comes near me. I know when to quit looking through the 2.8 long lens on the stick and go to the zoom.

The long zoom would be used at 400 for me at baseball, football, and soccer. If action gets close, the 70-200 would pick up that action. It really difficult for me to zoom while following the action. I guess I am giving more personal info than you wanted. 180-400 is an f4 lens and goes to 5.6 when TC is looking. I don't think sport shooters would want to give up on their 2.8 lenses.

If that is the case, the potential for sales becomes even worse!

So, if not sports, what? Revenue from Nature Photography is do lucrative, it would be safe to speculate this won't be a hot market...

So, other than our friends in Dubai....who's buying this beast?

Art, a used 200-400 is only a good deal if one is for sale.  Before I bought the 200-500, I checked Craig's List and other places.  There was nothing in Metro Vancouver at that time.  That told me that the people who own them are hanging on to them.  :)

Took me 2 years to find a used one for sale, Mark!! TWO YEARS!

I bid online.  FAIL

I checked out Kijiji....FAIL

I checked out Craigslist ... FAIL

Mine came from a friend and it was in amazing condition.  Was lucky to find a good one.

Probably import duties and also need to take into account 21% value-added-tax (VAT).

Presume Nikon advises each market / region to implement their own pricing strategy in accordance with demand / average income, etc, etc, etc.

IF they bought it in the USA for CDN at todays rate.... $15521.00 CDN.  Ever so slight savings.

Interesting... my favourite HongKong website currently does not mention a single Nikon product anymore!

Was wondering what their asking price would be for the 180-400.

Equipment: D810 | D300 | D50 | B700 | P5000 and some lenses.

Software: Adobe Photoshop Elements 15 + NIK Software Suite
