That is not good news you can only squeeze so much out of your core group. I think the P900 replacement is really the only Nikon I am excited to see and truly want next to a Nikon Df someday. But the Df is at the end of its cycle and this is not a camera I would buy those new expensive lens, I would troll the used market for primes and lots of them MF Ai/ Ai-S lens, AF-D etc.

They'll probably market a smartphone. If the entry level DSLR's and Coolpix aren't doing well, and they canceled the DL compact line, They're not going to have much besides the upper tier cameras.

This was a good read.

Here is what I would do... or maybe, what I think Nikon will do:

1) Make the D5 a D5s and make it continuous Video instead of the 3 minute maximum take. I have to think they are working on some enhancements other than video... add it in to REFRESH the Model.

- this would rejuvenate the sales of the D5 for at least a year.

2) D850

- This is a no brainer.

3) Nikon 1 J5 and V3....

- drop the prices, blow out all the inventory

Announce something new!  Like.... a V4 at a reasonable price and a Vx with FX sensor!

4) D500, D750, D810, and D7200

- drop the prices, blow out the inventory for this year

5) P900 - New Replacement Camera

- Make a ba-gillion of them, sell them at an excellent price point and makes sure you have the STOCK to meet the demand.

6) Put out a 600mm DX lens for the D500 at an incredible price point.

- this might be radical, but it shows you will be supporting the DX format for years to come and get people to really notice the line.

- may even help increase sales of the D500 and successor

7) Do everything you can to align yourself with Apple iPhone, iPads and Computer Cameras.

8) Do something with your GARBAGE SOFTWARE

9) Get rid of KEYMISSION.  Waste of time, waste of money and an embarrassment.

They project a $300 million dollar US increase in PROFITABILITY this coming year.  There is no way in God's green earth it will happen with doing NOTHING. So, there must be new bodies in the works, new upgrades and maybe some new glass.

The D500 is a simply beautiful all around robust camera.  Enhance it and add some super glass for it.  Make it more desirable and a category worthy of some respect.

Nikon 1.  Time to wake up and get in the game.  They have had a few years to sit on this line ... time to make a statement.  I would get rid of the d5 and the V3 and put out a killer Vx and a Full Frame to get back in the game.  The AW will hold its own for the time being or improve that too!  Time to light a fire under the Nikon 1 brand before you lose the market and the future all together.

I am hoping the D850 has some serious improvements.  This is an industry respected and desired model.  Small increments don't cut it.  I am hoping they make a serious leap forward with the improvements.

Lets hope we see some serious new glass, in DX, FX and Nikon1.

- there are holes that can easily be filled and will sell.

The P900 replacement will sell by the boatloads if it is priced properly.

So, this is what I am expecting this summer when they turn 100.

Lets see what actually happens.

How can something like the D5 have only a 3 minute video feature? I can shot video with the 3300 until the card fills up or the battery dies, whichever comes first.

I believe there is a 30-minute limit for high-end dslr's due to them not being classified as video recorders.

As such a different set of import duties is imposed on dslr's.

Something to cater to the snowflakes and their I-Phone/ Android selfie video market would be smart. This could segue into the mini /Nikon 1 /P9XX to enhance their smart phones. this could ultimately tie the circle back into the 3xx -5xx market and then hook them on the higher end product. The older crowd is a limited market and they need to draw the selfie crowd into the fold.

Realistically you will only sell so many $5000 cameras and $12000 lenses.

None of these great suggestions will come to be if Nikon doesn't serve the customer.

The pros that can afford the high end, will not brag about Nikon. And, instead of upgrading every year, they might just keep what they have and look around. Last time Nikon allowed their pro to look around, they moved to canon.

If the price right pass the enthusiast, then they will look elsewhere. Nikon didn't make the 200-500 until it saw folks buying sigma/taron.

If management doesn't change. Well, I might be getting a Fuji as they will be the only ones in town, for me at least.

Planet Fuji?

Thanks, Dennis.

Looks like it was worse than you thought Art ... 3minute 4K video clips.... firmware has improved it ... a bit..   https://www.digitalt...cording-time/ .

Another article from "Fixation" ....  "Upon its launch, the D5 could only record three minutes of 4K video at a time, although the v1.10 firmware update announced in June took away this limitation to extend recording time to a maximum 29mins and 59secs. Any recording that generates a file larger than 4GB (the limit for the FAT32 format) will be split across up to eight individual files. These can be stitched together in post production.

As far as "blowing out" inventory there are some decent deals down.  $1100 off the D810, even $500 off the D500 and you get the battery grips.

Lens pricing needs to be more in line with Tamron and Sigma.

Rechecked numbers.  $1100 is with kit lens.  $500 on the body and its $200 on the D500 body.  Still a discount on a camera that early in its life cycle, that was until recently hard to find???

Initially Art it was three minutes so you are or were right Nikon did fix it in a firmware. They got creamed when they announced the 4K at 3 minutes.

Check out 'Nikon Rumours' they are doing a poll on what everyone would like Nikon to produce.... the upgrade to the D810  is just leading an FX mirrorless body... these two are way ahead by far.  https://nikonrumors.com/

Kind of spread out but the D810 replacement is a reality not sure the FX Mirrorless Nikon is at least in the near future, but I hope I am wrong.

The F3 came out in 1980, and the F4 came out in 1988. However, I believe they continue to make the F3 until 2001.

That is a nice piece of marketing.

In fairness to Nikon, I haven't seen ANY camera manufacturer come out with something similar.

I have a feeling the D810 replacement is going to be one heck of a camera.

Jim

Jim, as a happy D810 owner, I can say that the benchmark has been set pretty high.  :)

Jim, as a happy D810 owner, I can say that the benchmark has been set pretty high.  :)

I can see that but parts of the D810 are now almost 6 years old(AF system etc imported from the D800 lets be honest it was a modest upgrade over the E that was modest over the original) and for most who have one that is OK because it is great but to get a larger market share they need to be revolutionary vs evolutionary and Nikon needs market share.

As good as the D810 is it is not going to bring new photographers into the Nikon fold so Nikon needs to step up.

There is a bit of a rumor that the 820 will have 40-42mg and have the D5 AF. If it indeed has the D5 AF, not crippled, then it might also have more frames per second.

OOOOOhhh but wait, we are talking Nikon.   :D   B)

Thanks, Dennis.

See that's the rub will they do it  if they do make the D820 with the D5 AF system and increase the buffer/FPS and add 40 plus MP they will have a game changer for sure. I'm not saying D5 speed but lets say 8FPS with a gigantic buffer for 40 plus MP it is still a game changer and the D5s better be the fastest out there when it is introduced.

I still think they should make a FX D500 body with the D5 speed and sensor/ buffer but that is not going to happen.

Again I have a feeling the D820 or what ever they call it will be huge but at what price but I think Nikon is going to make a splash.

Nikon isn't going to make a baby D5, at least not right now. They did that with the F100/F5. Nikon didn't like that pros used the F100 as the second body.

Thanks, Dennis.

I agree.

I wonder if this morning's management shake-up will affect product launch plans?  <_<
