A couple of months ago I got the Tamron 16-300 and it's a keeper. It will replace the 18-135. The 18-135 has really good image quality, but I wanted more focal length range. And VR, metal mount, and focus distance scale of the 16-300 is nice. I'm keeping the 18-135 because it's a good back up for the 16-300. And it's the best lens so far that I've tested for infrared photography. Before I bought the 18-135, I thought "Plastic mount, no VR, no focus distance scale...no way!" But reports of good sharpness all though the zoom range had me thinking "Try it."  It became the lens I used most and served me well. Here it is on the D40.
