Hi Guys (and gals),

It's been a while since I was last posting on this forum. Last year, I suffered a broken back and am now wheelchair-bound. To cut a long story short, we have moved to a bungalow in a nice area of Kent (UK) and I mostly work from home with occasional trips to the office.

The good news is that I've added another lens to my collection: a Nikkor AF-S 24-70 f/2.8G (the non-VR version). I picked it up on Ebay for just £682, which is a good price for a lens in such good condition. I've taken a few test shots with it, and it's a superb lens (as most reviews report). Now I have the 50mm/1.8D and 24mm/2.8D lenses that I don't really need now. Does anyone think I should keep either (or both) of them now? I'm not bothered about the bulk of the new zoom (wheelchairs give you a "lap" which you can rest things on).

All the best to those of you who might remember me. I hope to visit this forum a little more often than I have done of late.

Glad you're still keeping your chin up and shooting.

Flog them both and get a AF-S 50mm f1.4G which is sharper, brighter and frankly just a darn nice lens to have.

Congratulations on the purchase of a new lens, hope you get many endless hours of enjoyment from it.

Sorry to hear about your accident. Wish you the best.

And, WELCOME BACK!

Do I think you should keep the others?

Tough question as they are all good glass in their own rights.

Compare the images from all of them.  Do a test and determine if there is any IQ loss when comparing the prime to the zoom and if you really need the overlapping glass.

I think you are the best one to judge your need.

I have that lens and use it almost daily. I shot with it wide open most of the time and have found it to be an excellent "grabber." I have attached a photo taken with it at: iso 8000, f2.8, 1/640

However, I would keep the 50 for low light photos. Sorry about your back.

Many thanks for the kind words and thoughts. I am thinking I will keep the 50/1,8, but perhaps drop the 24/2.8 as I think the zoom is better at 24mm. I don't see the point in keeping both, and won't be selling the new lens any time soon.

Regards to you all, and I hope to show off some images soon.

If you think you may do some astro shots, the 24 would be good for that. Otherwise, sounds like a plan.

Hi Dennis,

Interesting suggestion, but would the 24-70 be less suitable than the 24mm prime for such work?

Yes, the 24-70 would be harder to work at the 24 end for astro in my opinion. This is one place you will see a prime lens outshine a zoom. I have found that even if you use the 24 end, it still have some characteristics of the zoom. So, I would recommend a prime. The 50 you have can be used, but it has a narrow field of view when you think about the night sky, even though 1.8 would be a good thing.

Thanks, Dennis.

Hello again, and apologies for not visiting the forum for a while (again).

Thanks for the advice and responses to my posts; I have now bought a 70-200 /2.8 VR (first edition) for £725 on Ebay, and this is a great lens.

My Nikon collection is now quite different. I have sold the 70-300 VR, the 24/2.8D, the 35/2.0D and the 50/1.8D, as being wheelchair-bound means zooms make more sense (to me). With those lenses sold, I have less equipment and have bought a hard case to store everything I would need on a trip. I would expect to use mostly the 24-70 and 70-200 zooms. I have kept the D700, as I still think it's an excellent body.

My best wishes to you all, and I do hope to post some images here some time this year.

Hello again,

For some reason I neglected to mention I also have an 85mm/1.8G lens which I intend to use for portraiture. I also neglected to mention I am a grandad now, and the little chap was 1 year old in April.

Apologies for not submitting some images; I hope to be able to upload something interesting soon. I am still working for my old employer (who has been very good since my injury) and at the moment am not getting a lot of spare time for photography. I hope this will change and I can resume my hobby.

All the best to you all.
