Photographing Beer Mugs.  I can't think of a nice way, to spend a cloudy April afternoon in Port Moody.

 

I used the Sigma 105/2.8 DG lens

ISO 64

1/250 sec.

f11

2 Yongnuo speed-lights - power levels varied from 1/64 to 1/16

I used a Westcott 28" soft-box on one side.  For the other side, I originally tried a large white foam card.  When I wasn't happy with that, I added the second speed-light and placed it behind a home-made scrim.    I was much happier with that.  :)  I also used a large foam card that was placed on top of each light source.   I tried to get some fill light on the front, with a hand-held foam card.  I wasn't as happy with that as I had been the week before.

 

All of these were taken with the soft-box and the home-made scrim.

As you can see, I gradually increased the power.  My only complaint is that my 7 year-old Windows laptop is next to useless, when it comes to evaluating exposure.  I think that my iMac 27" retina screen has spoiled me rotten.

 

I was quite pleased with the final results.  However, I will never stop trying to build a better "mouse trap"  ;)

2nd one is perfect for me.

 

Well done.

 

They look good to me, Mark.  The setup worked well.  I love playing with light.  Have enrolled in a Flash course at the College for May!

I just couldn't stop monkeying around.  Same camera settings, but I tried used 3 speed-lights and changed the position of the mugs, to show more of the smaller one.

I appreciate the positive comments for my first set, but I wanted to see if I could show more of the smaller mug; and bring up more of the detail.  Frankly, I really like both sets.

 

One weird finding, the images don't appear to be level.  However, I used my virtual horizon to level the camera.  If you look, the mug at camera-left appears to be listing to starboard.  However, the mug at camera-right appears to be level.  I used a perfectly level work table, so I'm really scratching my head.  :huh:

 

I still like 'em all.  Thanks for looking everyone.  :)

It could be an optical illusion due to the uneven stripping and the uneven design of the mugs.

 

But the detail is excellent.

I like the lighting on the last one the best.  Yes, I do see the listing.  Not sure what that is.  The 105 shouldn't have this type of distortion. weird.
