Yup.  Oops!

I really have to wonder about all of those plane spotters.  Discovery TV's Mythbusters once proved that the jet wash from a Boeing 747 could blow over a school bus.  I was half expecting to see photographers flying through the air.

FLIGHT PLANNING & PREPARATION

My personal procedure in setting up a particular flight...

1. Using the internet, I look up the website: www.flightaware.com  FlightAware offers a "live" overview of all flights worldwide.
swHzR5Y.png
2. I the look up the different aircraft types (displayed are aircraft currently flying at the time of accessing the FlightAware website)
Y2qpsXI.png

3. I opt for the Airbus A319 on this occasion. The overview provided shows all those A319's currently in the air.
4a5g2ku.png

4. Taking the flight duration into account, I opt for the flight DLH1710 (Lufthansa) from Munich (EDDM), Germany to Dubrovnik (LDDU), Croatia. The flight is currently en-route and flying at an altitude of 11,280 meters / 37,000ft (FL370)DDHCNz0.png

As the departure gate was not provided via FlightAware, I simply insert the flight details in Google. As you can see the departure gate is H38 / Terminal 2
FQqdh15.png

Next step is to visit www.simbrief.com
f3TYtxm.png

After logging in, I go to the "DISPATCH" section
9GKXKTp.png

After selecting, "create new flight", I get the following form which I partially complete. One of the suggested routes that is needed is mentioned in code below. During this process a snapshot is taken from my weather engine (Activesky) so as to determine the runways in use (subject to change)
MRijasm.png

The suggested routing " TURB6E TURBU Y107 BAKOR M984 NAXAV N606 PEVAL ZDA SPL L607 NERRA NERA8A " is then copy / pasted into a program on my PC called Pro ATC/X
sdKGPRR.png

Note that the 6 character "TURB6E" and "NERA8A" are what they technically call SID's & STAR's (SID = Standard Instrumental Departure and STAR = Standard Terminal Arrival Route) and are not calculated as part of the actual routing at this stage (auto discarded by Pro ATC/X)
RunGxLK.png

Overview of our flight
mJhcGEl.png

The route is also copied into the on-line weather program on my PC named Active Sky. This program is linked to the internet and weather updates are received / processed every 5 minutes.
Y9LqhdQ.png

Partial view of the weather briefing expected along the route
YpK2X9y.png

The route details are also inserted into anothe program Aerosoft Company Route Editor so that it is displayed in the on-board computers of the aircraft. This save a lot of time in having to do manual route inserts.
9scGtLv.png

With the above now sorted out, it's time to deliver some "juice" to our aircraft using another PC program "Aerosoft Fuel Planner".  Based on the amount of passengers, cargo, taxiing, altitude, wind, reserves, etc, we see that we require approx. 7.9 tons of fuel for this flight.

Very informative, Herman.

This sounds more like a strong passion than a mere "hobby".  I wouldn't be surprised if you hear from some airline recruiters in the near future.  :)

I just looked at the Active Sky web site.  Unfortunately, it appears that a lot of this software is Windows only.  Is that correct?

Thanks for the comments, Mark.

Hey, hey, hey... I'm enjoying my retirement! Let's just call it a serious hobby / interest.

Indeed, most has been developed for the Windows platform (personally, my reason for not going for Apple even though I know it's a really good quality product).

NOTE - Still being updated...

At this stage we program the onboard Flight Management Computer (FMC)

FMC to be activated and DATA-button inserted

M8O4kgr.jpg

Check: Aircraft type, engine type and the appropriate Aeronautical Information Regulation And Control cycle date. Currently the AIRAC cycle 2107 is being used.

Nn1xesi.jpg

INIT-button - Here we insert the company route (pre-defined flightplan to save time), the Airline flight code / number, the cost index number (predefined by dispatch in respect of engine behavior / fuel efficiency), the cruise altitude, aircraft position & wind data.

Weather data (wind factors)

Fuel prediction

The aircraft zero-fuel-weight (ZFW) / zero-fuel-weight centre-of-gravity (ZFWCG) and the required fuel amount (in tons) is inserted after which the FMC calculated the remaining data.

3qqFpwQ.jpg

F-PLN button - This is where we insert our assigned departure runway. In this instance 08L and our Standard Instrument Departure (SID) being TURB7Q.

U6jdlkS.jpg

5pHDFQX.jpg

PERF button

51QAYqV.jpg

PERF data - Based on the inserted runway data (08L) and earlier inserted calculation data, the V1, VR, and V2 speeds are automatically calculated. VR being the speed that the aircraft actually becomes airborne.

gFchjUp.jpg

PERF-button (next phase) - This is where we insert the actual weather data that is provided to us continuously by online connection.

Overview via the Navigation Display

Check: The flightpath via the PLAN option ensuring that there are no discrepancies

Herman,

I feel the same way.  Your "flights" have taken PN members to many parts of the world, and they were always enjoyable.  I will miss them greatly, and I'm sure that I'm not alone.  :(  :(

Meanwhile, this really isn't "goodbye".  It's more like:  "Until we meet again"!  :D

A little early to start PN members to start saying goodbye. Thought that would start in the last week of September. So l'll go with mine. Even if PN is "continued" somewhere else, l don't think l'll be there. With my current health issues, l don't get to go on photo outings anymore. And the whole 21 years l was into photography, l was always wanting to buy more gear and hated that part of it. Now since l don't have an interest in photography and have no desire to buy, buy, buy, it's a good feeling. lt's been an enjoyable 7+ years on PN and met many great folks here. This could be my last post so l say goodbye everyone.
