Very cool Herman. A friend of mine runs a version of Flight Simulator.. he mentioned recently that his version will only run smoothly on XP so he has to keep an XP machine up to date. Have you 'flown' around NZ

Peter, mine runs on Windows10 as both my version of FS and Airbus series require 64-bit architecture. Scenery mainly comprises of ORBX (Aussie manufactured) software. They have designed stunning NZ scenery but I haven't obtained that as yet... too far, Peter, too far!  Here's a link to their South Island scenery: https://youtu.be/xvD7unzK46k

I will check with Jim... I think he has a NZ scenery package... he flys a Cesna ... and a Spitfire .. He has even flown a Cesna for real.. his wife bought him a flight.. the instructor let him take off, fly and to do most of the landing( instructor worked the throttle) ... simulator experience a great advantage... I'm not sure you would get to do that in a real A318 .

It certainly is, Bill. Very educational as you gain much aviation knowledge and as a bonus... geography too.

I used to love Flight Simulators, spent some time many, many years ago with the Microsoft Flight simulator.  It was OK, I just found it to complicated to really get into and very little reward.

 

I later got into a World War I shoot which I just loved and they company went out of business eventually.  I tried a jet fighter simulator, didn't like the feel and one other won before I gave up on them.  Eventually, I moved to first person shooters on Playstation until I weened my self completely from this type of gaming, mostly due to lack of time.

 

Non of these compare to the detail you show above, very impressive.

Thanks, Art. Yes, much has changed since the early day of Flight Simulation. The latest being far more stable than previous and the add-on software is just as amazing. As an example, I have ai planes buzzing all over as their movements are interpreted "live" by an external server. This also applies to actual weather conditions. My flights are accompanied by ATC that switch accents subject to the region that you are flying in / over. All very complex but guarantee maximum realism.

Very nice Herman.  I am using Xplane 11, after having used MS FSX many years ago. I am amazed how much technology has improved since my FSX days

Sounds fascinating, Herman.  It is very tempting to get back into it. The screen shots are amazing and I can only image the attention to detail.

 

Computer technology has come a long way in the last two decades, the level of realism in games and simulators has leaped forward exponentially.

For those "armchair" pilots interested... ORBX just announced a 50% "Valentines" discount on most of their product range.  Wish Nikon would do similar!

I spent way too many hours on Microsoft FS, then ATP.  Did fly with a friend of mine in a Beechcraft King Air.  Surprised him at how well I handled the bird with no actual flight training.  I haven't had a sim in years.  Mostly play strategic games now.
