About Me

I enjoy photography, but I don't consider myself a photographer; or at least, not a person who enjoys the typical trappings of photography and all of the associated characterisations. I'd describe myself as an erratically enthusiastic hobbyist.

It's fair to say that I don't have a long history of being interested in photography. I can't point to a distinct time in my life when I picked up a camera and enjoyed a revelation as to the joys of picture making. I remember wanting to take interesting photos on the rare occasions when I did have a camera, but I did not experience a 'calling', as some others have.

My current camera is a Nikon D5100 (with a variety of lenses) and a Sony RX100. I've also owned a few Canon Powershots. My very first digital camera was a Kodak DC3200, and before that I had an Advantix camera, a Chinon, and some sort of basic rectangular silver device when I was a boy !

I also enjoy what is commonly called Contemplative Photography. It sounds rather ambiguous doesn't it? Basically, it's an approach to making pictures that emphasises seeing and experiencing rather than technicalities. My usual method is to walk and enter a state of mind where I'm as open as possible to the environment. I don't put pressure on myself to make photos; I just walk and walk until I see something that inspires me or moves me, be it a colour contrast or even the way light falls on the ground, for example. Doing this is surprisingly liberating and, at its best, results in an elevated state of mind at having immersed myself in the world more fully than normal.

At the moment I am not posting most of these these kinds of photographs online. Why? Well, they feel more personal than a lot of other photographs and, somehow, simply uploading them to the great glowing machine of the internet feels frivolous.

Apart from trying to enter a contemplative state of mind when time allows, I enjoy night photography and landscape. Actually, when I think about it, I have few preferences when it comes to subject matter ! I tend to get into most of it.
