People of the forums...

The official PlanetNikon Nature Stock Photography site is live, and I need beta testers.

www.PureNatureStock.com

At this point it is unbranded, unlabeled, bare-out-of-the-box naked. But it is LIVE!!!!

I will be working on graphics to doll it up, and probably change the styling and colors. But, right now I've got to test the uploading and such. If any of you want to send a few images as a test, just create an account on the bottom left corner and have at it.

This is fun, exciting, overwhelming, and marvelous. YAY!  :P :D :)
Best regards,
Darrell Young (Digital Darrell)

The site is a bit buggy right now, since I am just configuring it. If you sign up, it may send you an email telling you I did not get notification. I am working on the email system config now. I'll be busy for several days testing everything. This has been a real bear to configure. I've set up so many web services in the last couple of days that I feel prepared to do about anything with a web server now. If you have problems, please report the bugs. I'll solve some, and pass others back to the software creators.

I assume the pricing scheme is added automatically to our pages? We don't need to enter anything in the Price field? Is commission set at 50% - or is it 60%? I'm on this like a duck on a June bug - naturally!

Hey Darrell, First, might I say the Pure Nature Stock site looks TERRIFIC! It's very clean, easy to navigate. BRAVO!!! I just uploaded my first 3 files... Question for you: you mentioned FTP might be an option. Is that something down the road a bit, or is that available now? It would make it easier to upload batches of files, I presume. Also, is the price automatically set by the site software based on the file size? I didn't enter an amount there, just to see what would happen, and the images show up at $15.00 (which would be consistent with the files coming from my D2h-4MP and D100-6MP). Thanks! Jon

I assume the pricing scheme is added automatically to our pages? We don't need to enter anything in the Price field? Is commission set at 50% - or is it 60%?

I'm on this like a duck on a June bug - naturally!

If you do not put a price in, it defaults to $15.00, which is the exclusive price. If the image is on sale in another stock agency, we have to be consistent with their pricing. Most agencies sell a 6-megapixel image for about $5.00. They sell a 12-megapixel image for about $10.00. But, that is on NON-EXCLUSIVE images. The pricing above is simply suggested pricing, and not absolute. But, I am trying to maintain a degree of consistency, since most other microstock agencies are consistent in their pricing. If one charges $100.00 for an image, and another $15.00, it can end up being like a sale on eBay, where you could be "outbid" by a similar image at lower cost. If everyone is using a similar pricing level, we are all on a more level playing field. This shouldn't be an auction.

We have flexibility in our pricing here, and if you feel your image is very spectacular and worth more than the set price, then raise it to your satisfaction. Just be judicious. Remember that these images will eventually sell over and over and over. That is the idea behind microstock. Somewhat less cost, with recurring commissions.

If one has a lot of images online, their incomes will go up. Exclusive images can require a more premium cost, since that image is not available anywhere else, and so is worth more. Send exclusive when you can, and charge accordingly.

The commission rate system in this software leaves me no flexibility in having different levels of commission on a per-image basis. I can set a class of photographers to a certain commission level, such as photographers exclusive to PureNatureStock. In the near future, that may be come a reality with higher commissions. I am studying the market now.

For now, the standard commission rate is 50%, instead of 20%, or 25 cents per download like the two largest microstock agencies.

Darrell Young (Digital Darrell)

What does everyone think of the look and feel of the site? Color scheme?

Compare the look in FireFox and Internet Explorer. IE uses gradients, but firefox doesn't. What does a Mac browser do?

Tell me what you think of the site, so far. Thanks!

Darrell, I've taken a look at the site and from a 'viewer' or 'shoppper' perspective it is as Darin says, very easy to navigate. I can find my way around to look at everyone's photos and I also like the look of the gradient colors from the IE view. They pull your gaze down to encompass the entire site. You have done a great job on this site and it will only grow larger! Thank you for the time and effort you've shown here.
{any and all comments are welcome}

Thoughts for additional categories for PureNatureStock: Textures of Nature Mountains (general) Sierra Nevada Mountains Kings Canyon Nat'l Park Sequoia Nat'l Park Agriculture / Farming Just my thoughts as I'm looking through my images and trying to match them up with the current categories. Great work, Darrell! It's getting smoother all the time! By the way, you mentioned about wondering how it looks on the Mac... Jon, I added several of your suggested categories. I am trying to maintain as few categories as possible, as it will soon get unmanageable, otherwise. I do want coverage of as many of the national parks as I can get, and will create categories for any of them where someone has images. Let me know of other interesting ideas!
Best regards,
Darrell Young (Digital Darrell)
