On August 24th, I had the pleasure of attending the Blondie concert for PlanetNikon Photographer.  I asked for a media pass and was granted one in exchange for doing a review, which I just completed, for our next issue!

I cannot, by contract, willy-nilly post the images taken, they have to be in the magazine only, which is a shame, because I got some good images. However, I can post cell phone images.... check out my Facebook page for some video clips of some songs.

Blondie was amazing.  I was a huge fan in the 70's, primarily because I just loved Debbie Harry.  A strikingly gorgeous woman. I enjoyed their music, but not as much as I loved The Rolling Stones or Led Zeppelin, but I was still a fan and purchased quite of a few of their albums.

The concert started off pretty smooth, she was fashionably late... 10 minutes .... strolled onto the stage and got down to business.  This woman is 73!  And, still carries herself well and in my opinion, has plenty of WOW factor still left in her. She also had a moment or two of protest .... and advocate for the well being of the Planet, she had a shirt with some foul language on it that said, "Stop F*$#ing the Planet" and during the encore, sang to Russia with Love.  In Dreaming, she heavily emphasized that we are "Free, Free, Free, Free", maybe a little over played, but she got her message across.  I love the woman, good for her.  The rest of the show was pretty much solid Rock, Blondie style.

Clem Burke is still with the band (drummer) and he was as good today as I remember him in the 70's.  I was happy to see he is still with the band.  Chris Stein was noticeably absent.  He has had notoriously bad health issues in the 80's (auto immune problems) and I will bet the absence at the show was related.  Regardless, the band didn't miss a beat and the music was solid.

Loved the whole evening.

As media, we were ushered in for 3 songs, behind the sound booth, not near the stage, so I took my 200-400 and monopod.  I shot off about 200 images.  Got some real keepers.  After that, I took my seat and took notes about the show for the article.

Fallsview Casino is an excellent venue, as I suspect of most Casinos.  Comfortable seats, every seat is a good seat and the sound is solid. Can't say enough good things about the whole experience.  If you have favorite acts you can see at a Casino, treat yourself, you will not regret the experience.  So far, I have seen:

• 3 Dog Night a number of times at a number of Casinos

• ZZ Top

• Blondie

All greatly enjoyable evenings out.

Looking forward to the magazine review. Do you have to send her a copy of the article?

Thanks, Dennis.

Nice shot and story, Art.

I don't what is more cool:  the fact that you got a chance to see the concern; or the fact that you were there on behalf of Planet Nikon Photographer.  :)

Thanks, Dennis, Mark and Peter.

Dennis,

YES!  I sent her a tear sheet of the article with the images (3 total) I will put in the magazine. Part of letting the media in is so the artist and the venue get exposure. So, it is a trade off.  I hope we can start to build the download numbers as we get more issues out.  This issue is coming together faster than the last one.  I am hoping that with a few more under our belts, we can put more out faster and generate a following on social media.  The bigger you are, the more apt you are to get into venues such as this to be able to take images.

This serves me a few purposes:

1) It helps the magazine to have as varied a subject matter as is possible.

- there is a marque to seeing images from all over of venues most people don't ever get to see in real life.

2) It helps me in my personal quest to develop my photography skills

3) It expands my portfolio

4) hopefully, it helps you to do the same because this tool is for you too!

With Rock bands, they have a standard sign off sheet.  I can't post the images to any social media, I can't sell them etc.  I have to post them where I tell them.  In this case, for PlanetNikon Photographer Magazine.  So, when we print the next issue, I can then use some of the images to promote the article and the magazine.  That is IT!  You can always NOT follow the contract... and never get into another venue.  It seems very tightly controlled out of New York, so, I will play along.

That's the best plan! If your a "team player" the word will get around.

Thanks, Dennis.

Absolutely, that industry is a very small and controlled one.  Word gets around quickly.

Cell phone images are another matter, they said I could do what I wanted, stills and video, makes no difference.

As pro or amateur photographers, we've all chatted about copyright at some point.  For that reason, I completely understand where the bands and the concert organizers are coming from.  :)

Yes, I have no issue with the agreement.  You have a choice, sign, or don't go!
